Can we have at least 1 of the old skyboxes back? I mean, the ones we have now are nice and all, but i remember back in the day how the old ones were ubersweet. Everyone bitched when you switched em because the new ones look no where near as cool on a lower end machine.

0_o That's being awful picky, you really expect them to go into that much detail with the options?

I think turning backgrounds off should leave the nebula clouds in, but get rid of all the stars and planets completely. It would be like a blackish blue foggy environment. Not enough to hog up texture memory or bog down performance, but enough to allow the player to better orient themselves rather than having a pure black background with the sun as the only object being rendered.

Try making mine art without backgrounds. It's really hard to orient yourself.

Agreed. Though I'd also like to have the option of turning skyboxes off completely. For some reason the current skyboxes kill FPS rates.

Actually, my lower-end machine with a geForce3 runs better with the skybox maxed out... go figure

the backgrounds are also great for navigation. makes for faster aligning the ship than with sector jumpgates and radar.
