Haha, touche tarenty.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter why they carry on. It isn't necessary and we don't need to pay attention to it.

i agree griefing newbs isnt cool, but its not why vo doesnt have many players.
Anybody who believes there is griefing in this game really doesn't belong here anyway.
I believe there is griefing, but not that it's the reason the playerbase is smallish nor that the game has broken mechanics that permit it.
I define griefing by intent. It is not griefing to do something that harms another player when the intent is to accomplish an in-game objective (like getting credits or loot) or to role-play (like taking on the role of the brain of a stray dog wired to the flight controls of a Centurion by mad Serco scientists) in something resembling an honest manner.
It is griefing to do something that harms another player when the intent is primarily to ruin that player's enjoyment of the game, rather than to harm the character who may be your enemy. It is, of course quite difficult for an outside observer to tell one from the other.

MEcha gets a 7/10. It was a solid effort, but he's no Rin.
Wait! this game has pirates?

I have been playing for only a few days, still got my newb card (not at all ashamed) although im not new to combat space sims, I have noticed that VO's space is much more dangerous than others I have played. I mainly play as a trader/courier and I can recall a few encounters with pirates that didn't end well for me (I guess none of them really do lol) Although It is an unfortunate thing, it is part of what makes the game exciting. If I were to be allowed to progress my character completely unhindered by other players, it would not be a very satisfying experience. It is very annoying being exploded by higher lvl or better skilled players without warning or being given the opportunity to at least pay up, but I was completely aware of the likelihood that I will probably die miserably once I jumped into greyspace. and I was not disappointed, on multiple occasions, sometimes repeatedly. I skimmed through the training, just to get the jest of things, but I always had in the back of my mind the thought that I could be targeted by a player anytime. Common Sense is pretty valuable.
Sure I had my 2 cents to toss out there on the chat channel, I was understandably frustrated and felt the need to let some folks know what I thought about them. (Tactfully, of course) And I absolutely have a few four letter nicknames assigned to FootBallProphet, I'm a little peeved at him (very unprofessional :P), but im sure he plays the role of a demented psycho murderer in game so I accept his behavior as part of the natural balance of the universe. I do not consider it "greifng" or whatever, for someone to blast me outta space for the heck of it, although I appreciate a little professional courtesy and be allowed to at least pay a toll for my passage, after all I am a business man and I don't mind a negotiation. but I think that it is wrong to assume that the aforementioned behavior doesn't belong in the game. there is plenty of opportunity to make money and progress my character in this economy. Finding the means to do so is just an exciting challenge. Anomalous behavior such as mindless killing, is just evidence of the amount of freedom players have to play however they want and that is admirable. theres my take on it, straight from the newbs mouth. sry for the novel.
P.S. FootballProphet: I hope you get a nasty rash in a tender place.

I may or may not have paid Footballprophet a considerable amount on the understanding that he would no longer offer payment options...

You can thank [TGFT] and [VPR] for this relatively recent development in piratical behavior--after years of telling any noob they can find Never Ever Pay A Pirate, Because Death Costs Nothing And Paying Only Encourages Them!, you'll be hard pressed to find too many pirates who even bother with a hail, much less requesting credits. When people started saying this as a noob mantra rather than one-off instances of people RPing characters that wouldn't pay, I told the traders "This is going to cost you guys the opportunity to pay for safe passage when you want to." They laughed; we shrugged and stopped asking.
We've found that, unless you're a well known customer who understands that it's just business, it's best to shoot first and collect whatever cargoes drop later. 90% of the time, death is pretty much NBD; 9% of the time, it's a good bit more of an inconvenience than a few hundred thousand or million credits paid; 1% of the time (I'm looking at you, aspiring cap ship owners), it would be an absolute clusterfuck. Go ahead and mock us 90% of the time; we'll be amused 9% of the time, and absolutely falling to pieces laughing on the rare occasion we cost you a reactor. Your suffering and loss of invested game time will be much better reward than the credits anyway :)

LOL, kiss my shiny hull you smelly pirate!
Actually, Lecter, the most active pirates lately have been FAMY. FAMY is fairly consistent about offering people the opportunity to pay, unless they know the person won't pay or are angry at them for some other reason. As far as I know, quite a few people pay, including some TGFT members.
VPR does not typically tell people to never pay. We offer escorts as an alternative, which people are free to use or not as they see fit.

I can't get the image of some Amish dude flying a moth out of my head
Does text based sexual harassment count as griefing?
Pretty sure I should have been banned a long time ago if that's the case.

+1 Lector!
You nailed it!

I think I once posted a whiny thread like this when I started. Of course, things were a lot different back then but the context was the same.
10+ years later and look at me now! Muhahahaha...

It's a heck of a lot worse than just blowing somebody up a bunch of times, that's for sure.

Legally, perhaps. But as far as the humans involved go, it depends on the person and situation. I personally consider wasting my time to be a worse offense than verbally harassing me, whether sexual or not. That isn't the case for everybody, of course, which is my point.
Anyway, despite what some might think, sexual harassment is far from the worst thing you can do to somebody with only the power of speech. If you're so inclined, you can get inside their head and cause them to doubt themselves, question whether their friends really care, get them to join your cult, etc. And that's perfectly legal. People even get tax breaks for it.

I think it's fair to say that we have left the original topic behind, though perhaps for the better.
