The loot is based on a modified d7 system, in which a d4 and a d3 are rolled to determine the number of items dropped from each destroyed orc (that's what we oldbies call other player ships, because it is funny, and we are clever). The likelihood of any particular item dropping is based on the level of the item, up to a max cap of 30. After that, the item's level does not matter.
As you might guess, items also bind when you equip them, but only until your orc is destroyed. So you can't sell them, but they can be taken from your rotting corpse (some more oblbie humor for you ;)

hmm ok..i would prefer full loot but this also sounds kinda interesting..
so a player can be unlucky and drop alot of loot when i kill him ? and these items i can sell if i dont equip them ?

Yup, although there really is not "lucky" outcome for the dead orc. Any equipment that isn't dropped to be looted is destroyed outright. You can buy insurance for some of the equipment, but it is quite costly.
This is probably why there really isn't much pvp in this game. People that attack unprovoked tend to run out of friends rather quickly, and since most of the content is pretty much unattainable without the backing of a major guild that can be a big issue for the would-be griefers.
Edit:
Okay, so maybe I bent the truth a little.
It was just too easy to make up a lot of bullshit that might sound plausible in the context of a generic MMO.
Here are the really real facts:
Equipment is usually destroyed with the ship. This includes any guns, batteries or thingies like radar extenders that are actually equipped. It does not include any cargo that might be in the ship. That cargo is always dropped, always unharmed.
There is a small chance for the explosion to liberate a weapon or something from the actually equipped crap. Those items are almost always worthless to pretty much anyone; weapons and equipment are ubiquitous and chances are, you can buy whatever that person dropped anyway. If you can't, one gun isn't going to do you much good, and you will probably lose it to an explosion before the day is over.
Death comes quick and often in VO.
There is no "binding," there is no "guild-only content." There are also no instances, or mounts, if you can believe that. There is minimal dice rolling.
There is lots of trash talking though. And a lot of explosions.
You should really play the damn thing if you want to know about it.

Some items can be sold to other players for decent prices. I know Avalons used to go for about a million credits each. So as a newbie, it can pay to learn which gear is rare and keep an eye out for it.
As for cargo always dropping, that is true when it comes to players. If a player dies for any reason, all of his cargo is guaranteed to drop. NPCs, on the other hand, cheat a little. An NPC will only drop his cargo if a player has damaged him before he dies. So, if one NPC faction destroys another NPC faction's cargo transport, it won't drop the cargo. If a player destroys it, or helps destroy it, then it will drop the cargo.
If you get a cargo scanner addon (available from capital stations), you can peek inside the NPC cargo ships and see what they're hauling. Often they have valuable stuff, and sometimes it's even useful stuff.

Equipped items (power cells, weapons, mining beams, scanners/blockers, repair guns, etc.) are usually, but not always, destroyed when the ship to which they're attached goes boom. Other times, they drop as cargo crates you can fly over and collect.
Anything in your target's cargo hold will always, 100% of the time, drop when they're killed.

LOL bunghole.
Player cargo is always dropped in space when the player is destroyed. I have captured helo ore, sedina chocolates, and various other items of value.
Some times the player's equipment will drop. Not very likely for a single player kill, but if you sweep up after a major furball, you can sometimes find ultra charge power cells, law enforcement neutron blasters, mega positron blasters, and lots of weapons that sell for a good rate, many of which are too heavy for you to escape with in quantity. Noobs are sitting ducks. And if you actually played this game, you would probably not have to ask stupid questions in the forums. Do the tutorials.

The tutorials don't cover this.
