Before I was in sector 13 trying to go as close to the earth looking planet as possible. Well I ended up going around 1,000,000 meters away from sector 5, here's a link to a screenshot http://24.164.135.204/~banshee/1million.jpg
I'm still going, gonna try for 10,000,000
Those planets are just the background (part of the skybox). They stay the same amount of distance away from you wherever you go. I guess you figured that out already though.
Anyway, if you go too far out you'll get disconnected. I'm not sure if you'll be even able to play on that disconnected char because if you log on... you'll appear at that far out place and get disconnected. Maybe not, but people have had unplayable characters because of that in the past.
I forgot at what point you get disconnected though, maybe 2 million meters.

Back when we could turbo-tap, I sent BountyBot out into deep space at 200m/s overnight. The ship was 8 million meters out after a little over 11 hours.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary other than the skybox didn't pan smoothly.

I don't think the disconnection feature was there when you had your bot go far out. But I guess the maximum distanc is more than 2 million meters. Like 20 million or 200 million. I just remember a 2.
I think it's 2mill.
/me once went to over 3mill with a fast charge+efficient battery in s1

the skybox ends at what? 4.28 billion meters? And the person who got there got a bug that let them go like 10,000m/s and it still took them like 8 hours.
Hmm, I'm gonna stick an eff/fast in a bus and let Vendetta run a couple of days. :-D
I already did that back in 3.2. I winded up going out over 100 million meters. I started getting some really weird graphics glitches out there. I believe the devs said it had something to do with innacuracies due to floating point rounding or something.
The new limit is 2 million meters.
There is no real limit, before the server would crash but now it just times you out and you have to get a dev to reset you. Fox and I went 1 terameter when we first found the infin boost cheat.
Well I was 2.8 million meters away and then I just started getting dropped a lot. And at this distance I can't say anything and I can't read text from other people, or see who's in my area.
Doesn't sector 9 force you to turn around when you get to a certain point?
I got reset an hour ago when I got 2 million meters out. I got the "Connection Terminated," and when I logged back in, my bus was gone and I was in the station.
the actual sector crashing point is.. 2^32+1 meters.
Actually, Urza, it's not.
Sector coordinates are not simple 32 bit integers. They're floating point, which litterally means that the decimal point moves around the number.
So the bigger the integer portion of the number, the less precision available for the fractional portion.
That's why when you go very far out, the skybox gets jittery.

BountyBot is correct. The only thing that happens by going very very far, is a decrease in the precision of your position, which makes everything jitter. It also extends the Octree out to include you, which can potentially make the sector a bit slower for everyone. The skybox is always maintained at the same distance from you, regardless of where you are (hence the jitter at low precision), you cannot reach it. The "real object" planets are part of the skybox as well, despite their being actual rotating 3D objects (depending on your detail settings).
Argh, he did crash the server. I just fixed that bug; it could potentially crash when it dropped you for that reason.
so then... how did Silicon crash sector 3... After about 1 hour 45 minutes going about 6661 m/s? What happened there?
As i recall, a1 tolds us that he went out so far the sever could no longer calculate his postion... So unless something was changed....

i was talking to him when he was doing this lol
