Vendetta Online not affected by PlaySpan breach.
(Cross-posting from News):
It has been recently reported that PlaySpan, a major credit card and payment clearinghouse commonly used in the MMO world, has suffered a serious security breach. Vendetta Online is largely unaffected by this issue.
Our sole relationship with PlaySpan is their ownership of the PayByCash, who we offer as a payment option. However, using the PayByCash system only exposes the account name of the user, and never their password or any other information (much like PayPal and other systems). We do not share password data outside of our company. Ever.
Users who paid via PayByCash could only be affected by this compromise if they chose to use the same password on both the PayByCash site as well as their Vendetta Online account. If that is the case, we recommend changing both to new and unique passwords as soon as possible.
If you have never used PayByCash at all, there is no reason for concern.

Thanks for the update, Inc.

And if that IS the case for you, I recommend you burn the following into the back of your hand with a soldering iron:
Never EVER reuse a password you used with a financial company!
Especially don't reuse them on an online game. Just because somebody is good at making awesome games does NOT mean they are good at security. Case in point: VO still only allows an 8-char password!
This has been a public service announcement.

I don't think paybycash ever asked for any passwords when I was still using it. IIRC it just forwarded me to paypal after filling out the order form.
You could use PayByCash with a lot more than PayPal. I don't personally know how it works for some of the other payment methods.
I've used a few of the payment methods PayByCash offer, and have never been asked to register. Looks like the only people who need to worry are those who used the PayByCash marketplace to buy game gold.

Inc, yer a ninny for even bringing this up!

Yoda,
When there's a breach like this a lot of people don't know enough about how this stuff works to connect the dots themselves. It's helpful to let people know whether or not something is affected. My bank does this too, and I think it's good customer service.
Thanks GS.

Yeah, there was a lot of conjecture when the news first hit about what MMOs were impacted. People were saying EVE and GuildWars and basically anyone who had ever been connected to them. That general group includes us, and I prefer to clarify things in advance, rather than waiting for people to panic.
