returnee observations

I have trader 10+ plus pos with three uit corps one of those in grey, Faction change had no effect on my standings.

Pirates: if you set up a scheme/or 'scam' make sure it works, having collectors whom doing nothing but shoot things must be jolly good fun but dont except me to visit. If they get bored could the vo devs please fix the border defences and not shoot players in national space cause you bored in grey for some reason or other.

I was also surprised by the number of lords/sirs in usernames - recently the kids had the best with a mans anatomy bit aka long john shlo*g silver - kids eh.

The capship mission item is dumb - apparently you have to make thing elsewhere to get a marker. Mission pointer - waste of time unless you want to hit turbo for thirty km, i notice that asset prices in grey are not high too and might make a loss if one paid to trade there.

Heavy ion storms - I am pushing any probability that i might survive several in in xc with nasty bots and recomputed exit points - if the devs so desire that i lose ship and cargo cool thats going to annoy rather than be fun.

Escort missions - found a problem that jumping to the next sector was a problem, so in the end i only did 4 missions of any type during my sub time.

Newbies, please can vo devs stop them from broadcasting on 100 PLEASE until say they pass a test about the galaxy - a mission exists already about that. Filter the idiots or channel them to 1 only.

The loss of many of the irc bots made the game a lot better since my last visit

If vo could use its stats say a profit statement per day and use the givemoney might be fun say

sold traded goods @ x
mined x @ price
bought ships
bribes paid

loss/profit on period

I have now deleted the game and might return in another two years time.

Bye.

You can go around storms. They add an element of risk for people who want to gamble with the direct path.

Your comment on escort missions does not actually describe what the problem you had was. I guess you had issues with the convoy not jumping? Do keep in mind you are supposed to stick with them, not the other way around. They have been known to get stuck on the station sometimes though, which is a problem that needs to be fixed.

I pretty much agree regarding 100.

About piracy: Not entirely sure what you're talking about. I know the FAMY organization has some members who specifically do not collect money, but do refrain from shooting people who have paid other FAMY members. As for myself, I take a different method: if I see somebody who is carrying valuable stuff, I typically just kill them and take the cargo unless they initiate negotiations themselves. I only ask for payment from people who don't have anything worth taking, in case they'd prefer to pay a toll rather than die.

It may seem to you that piracy doesn't work, but I assure you it does. Especially since trident manufacturing was added. I made 2 million off a single guy last night, and I undercharged him. It isn't an especially profitable vocation, but it does work and is more fun than trading. Of course, there are some people who simply refuse to ever pay, but most people who talk like that are not traders, or else only operate in nation space. The people who actually do real trading through greyspace just treat paying pirates as part of the job.

As for nation space: tough cookies. Space is dangerous. Nation Space is safer, but not quite safe, especially near the borders. That is the way the devs intend it to be.

Regarding names, yeah I noticed a lot of dick-names the other day. Not a whole lot that can be done other than having vigilant moderators or an in-game way to report names, and the latter would have a delay before action happens, making it nearly useless (most people with obviously wrong names don't stick around). You could suggest that the name filter be improved to prevent them in the first place, but it's hard to algorithmically tell the difference between an inappropriate name and an approptiate one. For example, "Long Dong Silver" is inappropriate, but "Ding Dong Boom" would not be. I'm sure there are also perfectly appropriate Chinese names that have "Dong" in them and don't even sound dirty. Better for filters to be too lenient than too strict, IMO.

Meanwhile, we do have /ignore and /vote mute. Not ideal, but only so much can be done without funds to hire enough human mods to maintain a constant presence.

The Capship build mission is the last step in a long list of prerequisite missions and materials. It is designed to be hard, because we don't want 1000 cap ships running around all the time. So it does require a substantial investment of skill, credits, and time. But it is well documented at http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/Manufacturing#Trident_Type-M

And +1 on the rest by Pizzasgood

Sorry to see you go, sjwest. I remember you from somewhere; somehow I recall you being on the Android version. I'd be interested to know if you ever got to check out the game on PC as well (it's included in the subscription price).

Pirates - they are a part of VO, like it or not. Also, there are very few completely safe places in the VO universe. Verasi is right on the border of Greyspace, and therefore tends to be more dangerous than many other star systems. There is a guild of players dedicated to hunting pirates and protecting traders; point being you will run into players of all different alignments and play-styles. Many players feel that pirates actually enhance the game experience by making space more dangerous. There are highly skilled players on both sides of the coin. This website is a handy reference guide to pirates and types of piracy within Vendetta:

http://www.viperguild.com/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page

Usernames - I will do my best to keep an eye out for any inappropriate usernames in game. This is something I am able to help out with.

Capship Missions - These are very high level "end game" missions (or the VO equivalent thereof) and should not be attempted without the understanding that it is going to be a long process on the order of a year or more for a single player. I have yet to produce a single unit of Fused Composite Plating, although that's partially because my focus has been on other end game aspects. As pr-orca said, the capship missions require a substantial investment of skill, credits, and time so that not just anyone can produce a cap ship. If I were looking to get in the game, I would probably begin by building Tier 1 parts like a few Milanar Optical Sensors, and continue trading my way up.

Ion Storms - You should not expect to survive an ion storm in an XC. A lesson that I've had to learn the hard way is to always scout ahead any route I plan to haul with an XC using a light ship like the Centurion. If I hit an ion storm, I plan an alternate route. If I spot a pirate, the trade is off. You can also call for escort from the Vipers (monitor channel 4357, but be wary of pirates posing as Vipers), or any members of your guild. This is another reason to join a guild.

Escort Missions - I've never experienced the problems you describe with the escort missions, although it is important to know that you can get ahead of the convoy you are supposed to be escorting, and this will reduce your pay. It's important to use your radar to identify which ships are members of your group; they will appear as white dots on the scope. Stay close to these ships.

Channel 100 - I agree, however my understanding is that until VO's population reaches a sizable level it's better to give newbies unrestricted access to chat channels. The web-text adventure Kingdom of Loathing (KoL) has a good example of what I believe a chat pretest should look like in the tutorial.

Profit Statement per Day - Sounds cool, maybe something like this could be posted in Suggestions.

Hope to see you sooner rather than later,

-Phase

I don't get it. What's with all the "keep dem newbs off our 100!" talk? Are they keeping you from talking about really worthwhile things or something?

Everything you said sucked I will not be polite with counter points as my time does not need to be wasted other than this brief message to express my dislike for you.

Blah blah blah. Points at sjwest.

1. the border defense are currently trader biased, so you are clearly not paying attention, yes i sometimes sink a hound into UIT, for the fun of it. ( sure we can get to Dua for example, but it generally means getting out again is a bitch ).
2. Faction change had no effect on my standing also ( i'm in the grey/red with most factions ).
3. I lost 1 XC in a ion storm in my total time playing VO if you have a remote clue what your are doing it should be a non issue ( if i traded more heavily it might be more ), but in generally losing a XC to bots is rare sure its shitty but its rare.
4. keep in mind that bribes are not officially part of VO ( a lot of pirates implement them to well get money easily ).

Before worrying about noobs on 100, I vote for banning idiots from posting on the forums until they pass a test about VO and a basic English language skills exam.

Don't let the doorknob rip your balloon knot as you depart, sjwest.

+1 Lecter.

Also, I loved shooting the hell out of you 5-10 years ago, nothings changed on that regard.
