I had a chat with raybondo about this, and I'll say here what I said to him, if the inbuilt recording/playback function worked, I would produce a really good quality series of vendetta videos. I would even go so far as to potentially catalogue major political events and write a videoblog about them.

You guys know it doesn't actually record video, right? Just datapoints related to the motion of in-game content? It's basically a recorder of network traffic, and then we push the packet data back through the engine. So it's vastly more efficient than any video codec could ever hope to be, but at the same time it'll only ever "play-back" in the game client.

It'll potentially be an awesome tool for various in-game mechanics, like showing the "final moments" of the last major event, or having "news footage" of someone taking down a Leviathan or getting a bounty. But it's not particularly useful for showing content to people outside of the game. That is still the realm of codecs and streaming video all the related mess.

Yes we do know, but Inc if you watch the queen bombing vid, there are some moments of recording lag and other problems that i've encountered getting a really good quality video. I've managed to edit A LOT of it out, but it's not perfect.

Being able to play back moments from a regicide or a battle would allow me to film the same event from different angles. I'm well aware of the technical details of producing online video, but I just can't reasonably film all the things I want to film with live action capture.

Any chance of getting this to a working state in the near future?

Speaking of music (woooo really off-topic :p), any chance you could get the rights to sell the ingame music? It would be cool to have the soundtrack available on iTunes or something, plus the recent Game Music Bundles seem to be fairly popular, and VO's music is better quality than many of the others in there to be honest.

Many games these days have replay/recording systems similar to Vendetta's, and they can be extremely helpful for recording footage - both for repositioning the camera and making sure everything runs smoothly, as TRS mentioned. It's also nice to be able to record much more often without starting up an external program, and then save the really good stuff for fraps or whatever - it makes it more likely that people will capture the really good stuff for later video creation.

What he said.

The reason minecraft has such a big youtube culture is that recording in it is so simple, the same needs to happen for vendetta so we can get some beautiful free promo going.

The first set of comments was directed at the VO video ... for future referance.

I am keely aware of GS's limits Incarnate. I am just saying your frontline video could be improved a bit so it makes a more interesting and effective ad for VO. While the video was nice It does not do a good job of conveying the heart pounding PVP that is the centerpiece of VO, After 3 1/2 years perhaps it is time to freshen it up some with a video that is better representative of your work and VO's soul?

Just as the slow music and pace of star trek and 2001 has given way to the much faster paced Star wars and event horizon styles, Vo needs the keep up with thier target market - Short attention spanned excitement craving young males. You have 30 seconds to capture thier attention before they yawn and go to the next thing that beckons them.

Perhaps it is time to devote the hours needed?

I think the first couple shots in the trailer do a great job of conveying faithfully VO's mood, atmosphere, and pacing. Remember the "vet effect": seeing something for the nth time tends to cause one to block out certain aspects in favor of things more unusual. It's the way we're wired.

Here's my own latest shameless plug:

Is this closer to what you had in mind, PaKettle?

It's possible, yes. The recording stuff works, the playback stuff also works ("demo mode" on android uses it). The user interface and any other caveats (like dependencies I don't remember) would be the time. We'll look into it, anyway.

Yes, soundtracks would also be good.

Cool. One of the main advantages to me in that system is that the recordings would take much less space, so I could make frequent and long recordings without worrying about disk space, to build up a huge stockpile of "footage" to choose from.

Being able to play in first person with the HUD up, and then run the playback in 3rd person with the HUD off for filming would also be pretty sweet.

If you could also set up a way for it to output to a raw video file rather than to the screen, in a non-realtime manner, that would be awesome. But I realize that could take a lot more work and isn't likely to happen. :)

We can't vote yet it seems.

I am beginning to wonder if we will ever be able to vote....

That video would be good for the main site - it shows VO game play well but no where even close to being a good advertisment for the game.

Come to think of it - the media page could devote some space to player made videos and tutorials....

RE: the vet effect. Actually that was why I commentted on the VO vid - It was the first time I have seen it since 3 years ago and it struck me as kinda slow paced

In case anyone missed it, judging is now open, with all the new E3 trailers and all.

Judged. No idea how they calculate their rankings, but I kept going for about an hour. Looks like VO is currently ranked #3 out of 10.
