A new promo with Penny Arcade went live a couple of hours ago, and they were kind enough to link us from their newspost. As a result, we're seeing a considerable influx from their readership. We'd like to welcome these new people, and we hope our community will be on their most friendly and supportive behaviour (ie, be nice to the newbies :).
A couple of points commonly of value to new players:
#1 - Don't worry too much about dying, it's really not a big deal.
#2 - If you go into grayspace, you will probably die. Pirates live there.
#3 - See #1.

#4 - Read the tutorials.......they explain EVERYTHING.

On the subject of surviving pirates...

I've welcomed a few of them with my own special way, and so far I have to say...
...Where the hell have you guys been hiding? Yer going to love vo with attitudes like yours. "SO you killed me, I have more money, I can buy another ship, loser." Was the best line a newb ever said to me!
Cool.

I used to do the same stuff as most of you "noobs" remember, then I thought a little and figured out WE NEED more players, so I settled down a little and stoppeed griefing/killing noobs till they sub to the game. just my 2 cents and let the flame wars begin
I haz 1 fing ter say ter dis thred.... lulz..
The Penny Arcade thing brought me back from the dusty dust-dust of the long-forgotten.
Hello Vendetta Online. It's been a decade. I think I've missed you terribly. There just hasn't been another online spaceship combat game worthy of the name in that time.

@ret369
Hate to say it be pirates are part of the game, the game would not be fun without us, getting killed makes running cargo more exiting ( keep in mind I was scared to dead off grey space when I was 2/2/2 ;) ), my first experience was getting pirated the moment I came out of the wormhole, I tried to jump back and was flared to dead, but it did help me as a player, understanding the game etc etc.
So please for the love of god lets not give the noobs the idea the universe is save they need to learn how to fight for the cargo when to pay and when to run, the best way to learn this is to get blow on up a couple of times.

Pirates are important. If we had a real dynamic economy, pirates would be as essential as traders, as they must always labor to regain their faction standing. Most seasoned pirates have upwards of 15 trade license just from repeated procurements. :P
@Deathzor
I think you missed ret's point: there is a difference between behaving like a pirate and deliberately trying to make someone's early VO experience miserable.
I think if the devs have enough money to run the game servers on just the few who are willing to tough out repeated station camping/griefing until they get better, then sure go ahead and do that. However, I suspect we need to "help along" most new people (which sadly does include you evil rat types doing your normal activities!!!) and differentiate between the two types of behavior.
Seems to me most of the current rats are already striking a good balance at that (although they should explode when I shoot them more often :P ), so I'm not too worried about it and am just trying to clarify the point as I see it.

On a character that's not even close to the stats of the original Dr. Lecter: 13/12/11/15/11 Too bad the Devs can't offer old character retrieval for a fee...

Lol, I wonder what level I'd be if they put all the deleted me's back together. I know one thing for sure, my factions would be 100% fubar.
@Growlor, the only people that get me station camping them are Itans/vprs( yes i have special feelings for them lets put it like that ), I generally do not station camp new players ( hell I care enough about my standing to generally not attack in the station sector unless your well neutral of below ).
Second of all I'm generally a bit direct but helpful, but if I tried to explain you 3 times why telling your location on 100 is a bad idea, and they still don't get it yes I will show by a example, generally I do not act up on dropped locations, unless its people that should know better.
But yeah if a noob wants to get passed me 400k ( every 24 hours ) or get my in a really nice mood ( those have know to happen from time to time ).
I generally do not station camp and any body that knows me should know my favourite wormhole by now.
as a side note station camping a new player is generally not a good way to make money for any pirate, so I have RARELY seen it happen, even to people that get away I'm generally not unfriendly I do drop a shoulda paid from time to time but that's the worse it gets.
