VO 1.8.205 includes:
- Fixed crash on exit after changing certain Video Options on Mac/Windows/Linux versions.
- PCC Missions now have an optional Begin/End Time requirement that allows missions to be visible for a certain time.
- Ore taken by missions now count as being sold to the station for awards such as Basic Miner badges.
- Accomplishment and faction awards now cause the station Buy menus to update automatically so new items are available immediately.
- Added Front/Rear text labels to Front and Rear HUD radars that disappear when you hit Combat license 3. The labels are also togglable in Options->Interface->HUD->"Show Radar Labels when Combat < 3".
In addition to the above, another change should be mentioned that was accidentally left out of a previous patch log. We altered PvP collision damage to do only a fraction of the damage it did previously. Thus, when player ships ram other player ships, it does less damage than when they ram stations or NPCs. This was done to help alleviate a certain exploitative tactic of PvP killing designed to avoid faction loss in monitored or guarded space. The lack of faction loss for collision deaths was itself a previous work-around for a much older exploitative tactic where players could get others to lose their faction by suiciding themselves against their enemies. So, let's hope this latest alteration removes some of the issues for the moment, until some future problem is discovered stemming from players colliding too much (heh). Until then..
Have a happy new year, everyone!

It didnt take long for some poor frustrated wannabe rat to try and find a way to abuse thier inability to kill a law abiding trader. I was quite amused to watch my xc roll endlessly while he continuously rammmed me over and over for a half hour..... He finally gave up and had one of his KOS buddies come and finish me off so he could steal my cargo.
As long as the faction system requires us to simply take this kind of treatment so we can retain/protect our standing the faction system will always be a hinderance to good play and "unfun".
BTW - Happy New year and thanks for all the hard work.

I do appreciate and understand that. Some aspects should be improved by upcoming changes. Others are more challenging to address.

You have across the board PoS... and you have the nerve to complain about someone ATTEMPTING to exploit a MINOR flaw in a MASSIVELY flawed faction system? You CONSTANTLY exploit the BIGGEST flaw in the MASSIVELY flawed faction system... and you want to whine about that?
Pathetic.
Inc... you have a great game. You want more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play, so you can get more people to play, so you can have more money, so you can hire more developers, so you can add more to the game, so you can make it even better, so you can make it even more fun, so you can get more people to play...
Fix the damned faction system so the two warring nations are mutually exclusive. Make people have to pick one or neither. I've been here going on seven or eight years and this massive exploit in a massively broken, highly exploitable faction system has been been massively broken and massively exploitable for as long as I can recall.
How hard can it be to subtract a number of faction points from a player for every point above neutral they have with the enemy, so a Serco with +900 Serco has -900 with the Itani? So that a UIT with +1000 with the Itani has -1000 has the Serco. It's logical and it's been "in the works" for years. I know a bunch of care bears will whine... but seriously, it needs to be fixed. Until it is fixed, the faction system will always be a hinderance to good play and "unfun" for honest players.
Apart from that... great job on some pretty solid updates lately. Keep up the good works.

Yup, I agree. No, it isn't that difficult. There are some edge cases to handle, and it's generally better (for me) if all the pain happens at once.

So, pirates can still have tri-POS and now we can't even ram-kill them anymore! Sweet...
People whining that they can't kill eachother because of a faction penalty do not deserve to play this excellent game named VENDETTA. So you lose your POS status? Whoopty-freaking-doo. It's not like you'd become insta-KOS. If a pirate annoys you, kill him and fix your standing. It's easy. I do it all the time. I've done enough faction building that I could have reached 13 POS multiple times if I could just stop killing people. And keep in mind, I'm a pirate and hate hauling cargo around. It is my least favorite thing to do. Also, very few people are willing to aid me in that, for obvious reasons.
How hard would it be to get a bunch of traders together, run a massive proc-goods-moving project for an couple evenings, and then have plenty of reserves for faction fixing when you want to fight back against piracy? Cake. Certainly easier than building tridents. Hire newbies to help you - vets have literally hundreds of times as much money as newbies. They make excellent minions. If I, a pirate, can successfully hire them to haul crap for me, upstanding traders ought to have no problem whatsoever.
Plus, guess what? It would mean more player to player interaction, and also help newbie traders to have fun trading!
But I forget - you traders don't actually like trading, or interacting with other humans.
Oh, and in the case of an XC being molested by a pirate who lacks the balls to finish the job? Call in some help to distract/kill the pirate. Duh.

Well if Ryan actually paid attention he would know I do not have 13 gold bars. I in fact just got done recovering my UIT standing after killing a rat twice in UIT space. My xx and Itani standing are not gold either. As usual Ryan your assumptions are wrong.
I am well aware of the speedier methods to regain faction that some players use - thats not the point as I am sure Incarnate knows. There needs to be a way players can shoot back without the severe loss of standing when they are attacked. It is called self defense which POS players are barred from doing by VO rules.
In the end I have better things to do then spend my time hauling Plasteel all over simply because some other player has an issue with my play style. I dont feel that I should be punished for rightfully defending myself from the misdeeds of others.
The best part of My existence is knowing how much some of you hate me for it....

Kudos to Ryan for bringing up faction system as the essential VO flaw.
When the first player base uproar started in 2004, Incarnate promised next thing on his agenda will be to bring up a new faction redux.
It has been 8 YEARS, hey Inc >>>> 8 YEARS since you first started promising faction redux will happen 'soon'™.

And as usual PaK, you fallback to semantics. My assumption about you may be off (though, Ive seen 13 gold bars on your Care bear card in the past) but my point is still valid.
And though it makes me physically ill to say this, you're right... there should be no penalty for defending yourself.

Yeah... the faction system. Whatever it takes to actually make people interact with each other.
I stopped in over Christmas since my sub has been lagged for a while now. It was an interesting experience. The combat is still as fun and challenging as I remember it except, nothing else seems to have changed. At least, that was my impression as a linux user (except my Ice Roids were bright green). I know the phones and such have been great for face-time and media - but what does it mean to me? Very little unless there are actually more people to shoot.
It seems to me that the ability to simply side-step the primary conflict in the entire game (i.e. Itani vs. Serco) is an enormous flaw. Combat is where VO has always had a strong hand and the primary story-line is centered on two nations in perpetual battle. The really simple faction fix suggested above seems effective at achieving the desired goal of more player interaction and conflict provided an actual goal is also included. If the phones and tablets are really making a change in terms of the player base, how do I know if they aren't encouraged/forced to interact with the rest of us?

I stand by everything I said in the December newsletter about the faction system, specifically in reference to triple-PoS and factional mutual exclusivity. I called it the top priority in major-gameplay changes, and it is.
But, the change will not be made until I come back from CES (I'm gone next week, helping Verizon and Lenovo and others demo the game in Vegas). Unforeseen bugs in the faction code have very bad negative consequences, and I want to be on-hand to personally oversee the handling of any issues that come up. There are a great many areas of development where I fire-and-forget design tickets, this is not one of them.
It is embarrassing that the change was not made years ago; I hear people on that. There's some internal history that influenced why, but I'm not going into that right now, and regardless it's still embarrassing given the timescale. So, yes, we'll fix it.

"Revamping the faction system is currently the top "big" gameplay
priority. Triple-PoS will go away, and there will be tradeoffs to
different factional alignments, along with other long-discussed changes."
I look forward to this.

Lol, do not get me started.
I was tempted to go *gold* by incarnate in closed beta. He told stories of this explore addon, and maybe even a future "alien" race that would be encountered. I always wanted to be part of that race, heh.
I pre-ordered, got the box, got got some satisfaction that I was helping a developing game, because I knew in alpha that the devs wanted to sell an engine not a game.
Oh wait, I think you got me started.
I then decided to stick around, because closed beta really was just full of us whining vet bitches. VO could not have gone open beta at a better time, because of EA buying and closing EnB. Lots of EnB players flocked to this "new" space game, and lots of player kills were gotten by all. Fun was had (because it was free) but I met many a player like Mystic and Shape during that time. Then VO went gold. Mining and shit got brought in (even I had been beggin to fire lazers at the Ice-Yo's!) and stuff was good.
VO hit a sore point for me around 2005, I made an entire family cry about me killing their teenage daughter in a space-fps called vendetta. Then I found the entire family all cuddled together - "bot cracking" - exploiting the game on my watch? I do not think so. Anyway, the first VO carebears was born. Many debates was had and bot cracking was removed, and a lot of folk cried like babies.
Oh yeah, then a guide spawned a shit load of Samo for us to play around with, and I ran away with some. I had my head 'asploded lots, fun was had by me but not the guide it seemed.
Then I pissed off most of the Serco guys by leaving SAF and joining a pirate guild. Errrm, well the Serco guys only ever wanted me to back them up, the pirate guys seemed cooler. Yarr!
Then pirates = win, and VO is either full of whiny bitches like ecka, or newbs like crusader. Then lots of changes to make pirates = fail.
Making the game more friendly to new playes != keeping me(or people like me) out of their starting sector!! How many times did I kill Bojan before he grew a pair? 1. How many times did I kill Shape before he killed me? 0. How many times did I scare the life out of Mystic? 1. Looks like LOL to me.
Wheres the fucking explore addon already?

@RelayeR
you got the wrong person, just replace Bojan with Incarnate, soon™ is his life's motto, I am just a rookie compared to him.
@yoda
I resent that you did not mention I was roid crack botting with you in Jallik just when crack booting started. Ok, you did shoot me occasionally there but still... we were crack botting together.
And yea, we used to kill each other like 20 times daily, it was the best fun I had in VO ever.
2005 was a good year and we did put up a lot of good suggestions for Inc to work with - exploration, aliens, Akanese.... it's all buried somewhere in suggestions forum.
Kudos to all old BLAKs, IDFs, SAFs, VPRs and a good old guide RelayeR for making VO one of the best games ever from 2004 to 2006. Most of us stopped being gullible believers in Incs faction redux coming soon™ by the end of 2006. and left the game.
