How long can ion storms last?

Does anyone know what the absolute maximum lifetime of an ion storm is?

about 2 hours, in the past (old days) sometimes they lasted for days

Right, I know they last hours to days, but does anyone know exactly how long they can last?

Is there a finite limit or does the server just roll dice once an hour to decide if the storm stays or dies?

If I remember correctly, the storm lifetime is defined when it is created, probably randomly chosen within some sort of set bounds. I don't remember what those bounds are, off the top of my head.
