Giving out a freind key, gives a user.

Sep 12, 2011 ntli link
Your account name.

Your real name as registered with guild software.

This is not acceptable. Why would I give a *friend* key to someone not my *friend*? Well, because this is the Internet guys. My advice to all.

After paying for your game each month, log into your account, and change your name to some bullshit before you give out a friend key. If I wanted people to know my real fucking name, my account name and all, I would goto a club.

FFS!

[edit]

Lets not mention that this is a security issue, why the fuck can you just not send them the name of the character that sends them the key? Why relay ANY personal info? Naming my account is a security risk because then they know my game login name, all they need to do is brute force the website or game for most peoples passwords, and my real name? FFS.

You go girl!

I did say this about errm a year ago, and they did say they would change it, but I guess not.

Maybe they don:t want us to give out keys yet? Just like they don;t want a lot of capships in space. Because tablet users might cry.

It's OK yoda, I've contacted a legal representative that has looked through the EULA and TOC, and see nothing about Guild Software being able to share our account info in this manner.

It's here

But yes, that does not cover sharing a persons real name or account name, infect, this part:

It was already reported as a BUG and requested a few times in suggestions...

This is a ROLE-playing game... so we play a role, not our real "person"... and a real person can have many "alts", one as pirate, other as trader, another as nationalist... and this BUT/feature/design choice makes most serious players not use friend keys, unless using their main alt...

This is abuse of personal information. It is illegal, I do not see anywhere in the EULA where it says the devs can share my name, unless a law enforcement agency request it, WTF?

I used to love this game, giving out two friend keys has changed that.

It was reported back when we first implemented friend keys, and I was quite sure it was fixed quickly after it was reported. We were not aware this was still present. I missed any related suggestions threads.
Sep 12, 2011 ntli link
Well it is. And it is illegal.
Sep 12, 2011 yodaofborg link
Yeah, way to spoil my chars Inc, I was being nice :(
Sep 12, 2011 incarnate link
FWIW, Ray was sure we fixed it too. We're looking into it now. It's possible it was somehow reverted or re-bugged by some other change since then, but that'd be.. surprising? It is definitely not intentional.

Maybe people just aint as nice with newbs as I am, but yeah, both of them reported back that they got my full name, and were worried. Hey at least they were honest with me.

Lol, nice with newbs, thats gotta be a new thing for me but...

The fixing of this issue was even directly listed in the 1.8.151 changelog, which dates from Oct 30th, 2010, a few days after it was originally reported (we fixed the problem immediately, but didn't list it until the next release changelog):

"- Giving out a Friend Key no longer provides sender's real name."

(You can see the changelog in this guy's bugs post)

So.. we did fix this, at least to the best of our testing and knowledge. I have no idea why the issue re-emerged after that. There must be some case we missed, or some new bug that re-created the problem. In any event, we're checking into it now.

Like I said here >> http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/25239#310735 I thought this was addressed, so it kind of came as a surprise when one of them pm'ed me.

On the legal front, like I said, you have it covered here

12. We cannot ensure that your private communications and other personally identifiable information will not be disclosed to third parties.

So yeah, just please fix it so I can give out keys if needed :) I will be happy. As far as my chars that have been exposed. Meh, I can make new ones.

Well, I'm less concerned with legal liability, and more that this problem exists at all. We really try to be vigilant about security and privacy related issues. It's something that resonates with us personally, and it is quite upsetting to learn that this problem has been out there.
Sep 12, 2011 yodaofborg link
Yeah, I kind of know that, so was kind of surprised when someone I know well ripped into me about it.

And it is illegal.

No, it's not. Welcome to not being in the EU/UK: aside from banks and medical records, the U.S. doesn't have blanket laws preventing the unauthorized disclosure of personal information by common merchants (unless the state of Wisconsin has some really funky privacy laws of which I'm unaware). Yoda's already pointed out why there's no breach of contract issue.

Which is not to say this isn't stupid of GS -- just that you're throwing around big words unnecessarily and incorrectly.

States about state to state law, but does not encompass the entire globe, I smell a lawsuit.

Yoda, I hope that was meant sarcastically, otherwise it's an Allohesque mangling of warranty disclaimer language >.<

/rant against laypersons with an overinflated belief in privacy laws

The email no longer includes your real name and account name. It only includes your character name now.
The server-side is fixed now and the client menu will not show your real name in the next client update. Even though it is visible in the menu, it is not used.

@ Raybondo

Can you make sure it will not revert this time? :P
