Actually, I'm pretty sure the friend key is a key you enter into an existing (previously unsubscribed) account. So you can use up your first 8 hours (gametime), then enter the key to unlock an additional 14 days (realtime). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong? As the only keys I have experience with were the promo-keys, which worked as I explained in this post.

Yep, as long as they haven't actually subbed yet, the friend key should give them the 14 days calendar time. Of course, you can only use one friend key - once that 14 day's expires, you have to crack open your wallet.

If desperate, offer to mow somebody's lawn or shovel somebody's snow, depending on local climate, for the $10 it would take to play for a month. If you're so deep in the doggy-doo that you can't even do that, you have more important things to be doing than playing video games :)
