Do the three hives compete or cooperate?

Feb 05, 2011 Pizzasgood link
I'm curious as to whether the three hives are all working together for the greater hive good, or if they're independent competing systems.

Specifically, if groups from two different hives both tried to infest the same asteroid field at the same time, would they fight over it, or would one of them leave, or would they share it with each other?

(Yes I realize the above scenario can't actually happen right now.)

They would fight over it, I believe. They are run as separate entities, I don't think there is any logic for cooperation amongst the hives. But there might also not be much for them fighting one another right now either.

Michael can answer the current case best. But as far as the intended design, they would fight.

Excellent, that's the answer I was hoping for. Thanks.

Translation: I have no idea how the macro level of PvE/EvE works in my game. Maybe someone who does will weigh in, though I'm in no rush to get an answer from him.

While we're on the topic, though, is it an "intended design" that convoys' weapons fire hitting a player within the NFZ not trigger hostility by the strike force? If so, I want to know how to apply for whatever license to kill they get :P

Lack of actual game content to distract me.

Lecter, the current system was not implemented for the use-case that has been described (hive-vs-hive). I specifically laid out that the existing hives would NOT be able to conflict with one another at the present time, and defined that as part of their expansion requirements and locations. So, no, I have no idea if Michael implemented anything related to the question, since it was not a part of the spec at the time of implementation. I certainly didn't ask him to, but it's possible that it was done just as a part of generally handling conflict. No, I do not audit every line of code added to the game. Your whole line of criticism is inane.

And yes, I believe the NFZ hack you describe was done because of convoy-strike-force battles breaking out all over the place and causing server issues. It wasn't a "design" thing, more of a "quick hack to fix stuff being bad".

"Dear Pizzaisgood: interesting question but, as you note, it's impossible for them to interact right now. So, I think there's no code addressing that sort of behavior either way. But I eventually would want them to fight each other."

Now, would that have been so fucking hard?

Really, though, I didn't realize there was a distinction between a "design" thing and a "quick hack to fix stuff being bad" in VO. Learn something new every day.

You enjoy Spain, now, ya hear?

If that had been accurate, I would have said so. But, I couldn't remember. We did have some NPC-vs-NPC stuff at one point, but I think that was prior to the hives and deliverator. So I answered to the best of my recollection at the time (which was clearly fine for the person asking).

Can you please dial down the excessively-caustic/pedantic-dick-factor, or at least keep it off of General (and Suggestions and Bugs)? Thanks.

Oh, absolutely. My target for this new attitude will be a "fastest to get it out there" approach.

At the risk of encouraging Lecter & genka...

Oh right, now I remember why I read the VO forums, to see Doc continually poke Inc with a stick until Inc snaps, the fanbois come out to defend Inc, and then genka says something random.

It's like coming back to your favorite chair and watching one of those completely predictable reruns of The A-Team, you know, the one where they try to get Mr. T on a plane so they can fly somewhere to save some poor sap, but get trapped by bad guys with guns and poor aiming skills, then build a tank out of spare parts and just barely escape in time.

I love that episode.
