Share your VO setups/configurations

There didn't seem to be a thread for this already, so I figured I'd start one. ITT we share our control setups and configs and how it works with our various play styles. People can exchange ideas and perhaps draw inspiration from other players to improve their own experience.

If you want a site to host WGAFs, try pastebin.com , or sharebee.com for misc. files, joystick profiles, etc. tinypic.com works for images/screenshots.

For me, I'm a trader/survivalist player who doesn't go looking for fights, but take combat seriously, trying to fight as effectively as possible to minimize my death count. Because I do a lot of flight sim games in addition to VO, a good joystick/throttle set was a natural choice, but leaves something to be desired for analog thruster control, so I added a second stick for the left hand. The result is a a Saitek X52 on the right for pitch/roll/yaw, targeting and weapons control, hail, and activate, and a Saitek Cyborg EVO (adjustable ambidextrous flight stick) on the left, for strafing, turbo, brakes, and Navigation/Charinfo/Toplist/Jettison. The dual joystick approach makes control much more fluid and natural, and also enjoyable, especially with larger, heavier ships like the moth and ragnarok. And no, I didn't buy all this *just* for VO, but it works really well for it, and I recommend it if you want to go the dual-joystick route. The throttle is of less use for VO, but can't be disconnected while using the X52, so I keep it there and use the clutch key.

One thing that really makes the X52 great for VO is the massive number of buttons it has, and the pinkie shift switch, which is unique in joysticks, allowing you to easily hold that and press any other button on either stick at the same time, doubling the number of commands you can map. If you use each of the 8-way hat switches as 4-way switches, and neglect all of the buttons on the throttle, or toggle switches on the base, you still have a total of 24 buttons at your fingertips, that can be used to trigger up to 48 different commands in VO. If you inclue all of the buttons and switches, you have more of them than you typically have keys to map them to (I actually had a problem with this, because the profiler can't do shift-keys as a single button press without the shift switch). There's a lot of memorization involved, but coupled with the very precise and natural control of dual twist-grip joysticks, I find it really adds to the immersion and "professional feel" of playing VO. I could never go back to keyboard and mouse.

I use targetless, MAID, TCS, TA, and cargolist plugins, and have them mapped to the toggle switches on the base of the stick.

I use a number of custom binds, including these: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/9/3229?page=17#300200

If anyone wants my joystick profiles or WGAF, let me know and I can post them.

What are some other flight sticks or custom control schemes that you guys have tried and found to work well for you?

nice old style G-15, btw dude the USB wire inside the cable is really thin aluminum don't move it around too much for lan parties and stuff... I broke two of those because of the shoddy cableing, everything else about em was gravy.

oh yea and samsung displays are awesome :D

i use default controls with FA toggle set to the sidebutton on the mouse.

Keyboard/mouse users should...
/set doKeyRamp 0
Make w/s the up/down strafes and r/f the forward/back strafes
Make the FA and AA toggles very handy.

AA toggle works well on MMBUTTON, and FA could be on 'y' or a number key.

W/S as up/down is personal preference. I don't use it.

It's objectively better but it's true that some people have a personal preference for making things harder for themselves than necessary.

Taken a few months ago.

Second monitor generally has TextMate/Notepad++ running when I'm playing VO.

G13 has the standard strafes plus stuff like n/j/m/k bound to various keys. At one point I had an analogue zoom set up on the thumbstick.

Thanks for the heads up spidey.

Slime, never tried the g13, looks like a nostromo remake. How is it?

Also I really need a second monitor again... very handy for IM, watching news streaming, movies, etc... while mining in vo. (:

It is not nearly complete but... as an uber-nerd, I'm working on a mock up of my vision of an SCP's cockpit. I'll post a pic or two when its done.

Low res cause I took it with my iphone and it seems to hate taking pictures these days (since I updated the OS anyhow).

As you can see I have more screens then any of you need, but I tend to use them all pretty well... left is for VO, middle for web stuff (vo site, vo wiki, other secret stuff), and far right is IRC. I don't always use them in that order. Do most of my lua code either in a terminal floating above vo or on the laptop. Saitek cyborg EVO ftw!! and G5 mouse but don't use it to actually fly, I can't fly without a stick :(

All these screens come in even more handy when I'm doing non-vo stuff ;)

Holy crap incarnate that's awesome!

Really didn't expect the game to look that good on a tablet that small. Oh and who makes that tablet model?

Did anyone notice the "Host Nation War Sunday" sticky on the black thing in spidey's pic? XD

That black thing is called a tower it is an ancient relic of computing
Nov 28, 2010 Earthshine link
More appropriately, it's called an Antec 900, and is probably the nicest tower I've ever worked with. (my own is a CM Stacker T-01, and is better for size, durability and bays, but is comparatively a pain to work with). I was going to comment on it earlier, but forgot. Nice chassis, spidey!

lol I just noticed slime's 2nd monitor.
Keep on truckin'!
