First Practice Mission - What to do?
There should be a button at the bottom of the mission log titled "Continue". You have to push this button to get the next log update.
All you really have to do in the first training mission is fly around some, read the mission log updates, and dock. Head for the ports on the large asteroid with the blue flashing arrows pointing toward them. If you want to target your closest enemy, push 'x'. Look for the tic mark "-{" on your HUD that points in the direction of your target or for the red target box on your screen, left mouse button to fire.
After you complete training I then click the Mission Board under Your PDA to get the next training mission. Hope this helps.

What I'd normally say: Pray tell, how do you manage to get through life with such crippling cognitive defects?
What I'll say instead: Hi, Pey!

You have to get pretty close to see them, but they are there. In the center of this screenshot a docking bay with blue arrows is visible:

In the newb sector just head for the giant asteroid with the industrial structure out front until they come into view. You can also aim toward the "S" icons on your radar (left display is front, right is rear) which represent docking ports.

how can someone not know how to fly in such games? I mean...there are dozens of space-shooting games, and all have the same type of interface in the end. Conflict: Freespace, Starlancer, Freelancer only to name a few.
but then again, there are ppl who don't know how to act in FPS games...

The only reason I believe someone could be lost in the newbie zone for 8 hours is because I watched my girlfriend play through the tutorial with me right next to her giving tips, and I remember Inc saying something about VO being a first game for some players. The training missions do tell you everything you have to know if you read carefully, but there's nothing wrong with asking for a little outside help.
My best advice is don't worry about rushing through the tutorials, just fly around and enjoy it. When you're ready for something new then go to the training missions.

swing and a miss lecter
I always wonder..with a game as unadvertised as this, how is it the first game for some players? Is it all people trying out what their couples spend a bunch of time on?
