Hey VO, I'm Ruscour, and I've got some questions that I hope you can answer.
I am heavily considering buying this game, but before I do, I just want to find out some things to make sure it's right for me.
Firstly, a question about the community. I understand the community is small, so I'm wondering if there's really enough people for group activities. As people who have played this game for a while, do you ever have difficulty finding people to group together for something? Are there always people around for PvP?
As an extension to this question, are groups primarily formulated through guilds? And can anyone suggest particular guilds for me to look in to?
On the topic of popularity, I'm Australian, and live in an awkward time zone. Aussie players are a minority in all games, and with a game with a small popularity such as VO, I imagine very few Aussies do play, and that there isn't a specific Aus guild. That's fine, and there seems to be a few people around (chatting on 100 at least) at my prime-time, and I'm available on weekends (where midday is US prime-time), but is there enough people for PvP in my time?
Another question I have is on content. How much solo content is there for someone to truck along with? Is the progression boring/grindy?
Continuing my wall of questions, PvP. Are people with lesser ships/skills flat out pwned by people who have played for longer? Do you really need to be at a high level to be able to compete? As a player with a weaker ship, and with lower skills, would I have a chance to stand up to someone with better stuff, if I could outmaneuver/aim/whatever him?
One more thing, my current character is Serco, however it seems like 2/3 of the population is UIT. Is it advantageous to be unaligned like that? There's also more Itani than Serco, does this population imbalance show?
Erm, I think I'm out of questions. Oh wait, what's your opinion on joysticks? :-)
Thanks for reading, sorry for having so many questions.

Hello Ruscour. I hope you do decide to join, it's a nice place
1) Sedina B-8, a greyspace sector, is an unofficial arena for PVP which usually has SOME people in it. Even is no one is there, say on chat 'I'm looking for a fight.' One will usually turn up, but dont expect it to be necessarily polite..
2) I'm not sure about that. I'm a west-coast USA guy here, so I don't really know.
3) Solo content: The only REAL grindy/boring bits are one early on and one later (but that isnt as bad). Clawing your way to combat 3 from the beginning solo is as boring as VO gets, but it usually won't use more than a few hours.. (which can vanish if you have a helpful higher-up player)
4)You do not need a good ship to be good at pvp. Licenses/levels have almost nothing to do with it. It depends entirely on how well YOU are at flying/dodging/whatever. A Vulture mk3 with neutron mk2's and a heavy cell is an excellent pvp ship, and is avaliable at combat 4, and light weapons 4.
5) Alignment. It's never been clear to me why Serco has such a low population. Also, UiT is kinda hard for a first character due to lack of easy access to military-combat EXP missions.
Serco get the hardest-hitting 1v1 ship (The SkyCommand Prometheus, and variants) while the Itani get the much-controversial Valkyrie, a hyper-agile fighter that many people will state is one of the best ships in the game, and for good reason.
I'm a mouse user, but it seems to me that using a joystick or mouse gives no real advantage or disadvantage. Try both, see what ya like.
Hope to see you ingame sometime

Hey Ruscour,
I think you should look into joining PA. We have at least one Aussie player. We also have players on at all hours during the day and night. So you are more than likely to run into someone every time you log on.
As for content, there are many things you can do both in groups or by yourself. Some things can seem kinda grindy but some people are willing to help you through that stuff.
As for levels, I agree with Spedy. Someone with low levels can beat someone with high levels if they have the skill.
The serco and itani seem to go back and forth. Don't worry, I am sure there will be a time when the Serco make a come back.
As for joysticks, its totally up to you. People use/prefer trackpads, mice, joysticks, gamepads, homemade footpedals and many more types of input...so find what your comfy with and go to town.

I wasn't really sure if I would keep playing after my trial either. So what I did was just went ahead and paid for the first month so that I could keep playing and find out if it was something I wanted to do. After the first month I was still having fun so I paid for a second. By the time that ran out I knew I wanted to stay and subscribed proper with a recurring payment.
Combat in this game is mostly based on your actual skill. Better gear helps, but if you have sufficient skill you can still beat people with lowend stuff.
Furthermore, it doesn't take very long to reach high enough levels to buy all of the important stuff. There are a few things that have high license requirements but they aren't particularly amazing.
As for finding people, sometimes it can be a problem, but it doesn't bug me much. I like 1v1, so as long as there's somebody around who's not significantly worse than me to fight, I'm happy. Group stuff is fun too though. Every Sunday a bunch of us get together for "Nation War", which is a big 4-way battle between the main factions in the game. Besides that, sometimes you get some people together and go conquer a station, or take out a Leviathan. And sometimes people just have random free-for-alls with 4-8 people or so.
There are a number of active guilds. Pirates, traders/miners, pirate-hunters, and nationalists. On this website, on the left, there is a link to a list of guilds and who's in them. If one of them seems interesting, talk to those people in game or use the link here to see if they have a website where you can find out more.
As for solo stuff, there's a bit to do. I personally don't find that there's enough solo content for it to be worth subscribing if I'm just going to be playing by myself. I have more than enough non-subscription singleplayer games as it is. I'm mostly here for the PVP.
Now, we do have enough solo stuff for me to keep busy on those occasions when there isn't really anybody around. At this point, when not fighting I mostly occupy myself with the support stuff that is required to sustain combat - making money, hauling equipment to places where I need it, building faction, that kind of thing. You can also manufacture certain ships and gear, so that's another thing I'm probably going to start doing sometime.
Oh, and there are some racetracks too. Sometimes I spend some time trying to set a record. Only managed that once so far. The race tracks require very careful flying because you're inside tubes so it's very easy to scrape the walls and blow up.

Thanks for the replies, guys, I'm pretty sure I'm going to sub, and I'll look into PA, seems pretty big.
In any case, I have a question about stuff. If your ship gets 'sploded, is it inexpensive to get back? In EVE, when you die you lose a LOT (unless you're insured, which is a lame system imo), so I'm interested in finding out what that's like in VO. All the ships/parts seem really inexpensive based on what I've seen, so if you have a ton of money, what does it go towards? Or do ship prices really ramp up?
Thanks in advance, sexy community is sexy. I'm a noob, but I'm not as downright retarded as the other new player who recently posted on this forum, I had a look at his thread(s) and lol'd.

Welcome to the nuthouse.
Ships are fairly cheap and buying new ones will probably not be the limiting factor for you unless you only do PvP.
Tons of money goes towards.... having them? Some well-off players sponsor events, some keep vast hoards of cash. Some of us get pirated and pay; that takes some money off your account as well.
Basically, go fly, explore, try stuff and die a lot. And if you ever find out that you are as bad at combat as me, skip combat entirely and join the Interstellar Pacifists Association:)

OK then.
Lecter, you have a bad case of that unnamed disorder where you assume everyone who posts anything in a forum anywhere is a troll. Also, your image failed, but I know what it is by the file name, so ye.
It seems kinda weird that there's no big goal with money, aside from hoarding ships (which seem inexpensive). People have money for the sake of money? That's kinda cool, actually.

Please don't feed the trolls.
There's no big goal with money yet. The economy is still in its infancy, but is being developed. Ships are pretty inexpensive, but as you get into PvP, you will go through them rather quickly.

Yeah. You can easily burn through millions in a day via PvP. My second favorite ship loadout (which is the primary one I use due to convenience) costs about 87,500 credits. (You can get one nearly as good for much less, of course.)
Whenever capships get implemented, those will probably be pretty expensive.
EDIT: I also see the image. Maybe it was a temporary problem or something.

Funny, the image works both here and on my blackberry - sounds like someone is a little hard up for a comeback.
Anyway, we're all just terribly happy to see you here, and look forward to responding at great length to your inane questions.

Just bought a joystick FYI, was pretty cheap and looks sexy.
Yeah, my internet is capped (used limit, welcome to Australia, #1 in beer, #293 in Internet), so that explains why the image didn't show, all good.
(I know I'm feeding the troll, oh well)

New players keep the game going by supporting the developers, and if you didn't want to see noobish questions, why did you click on this thread? Seriously, there are a million other places on the interbutts that are far more suited to your trolling capability.

Actually, that is something akin to the warmest welcome I have yet to see Dr. Lecter utter yet. You should be flattered. Or he may have a bad day:)
Hoarding money for the sake of hoarding it is cool.
My favourite "combat" loadout costs 150.000 or whatever a Behemoth XC costs. I just pay the damned things...

To be fair, I also noted that the image was unavailable for a period of time. My internet is not capped, and all the internet tubes are connected to the region I live in.
The internet is not a truck; it is a series of tubes.
Whistler, we live in an internet that has tubes, and those tubes have to be trolled by men with wit. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Hortan?! I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Ruscour, and you curse VO's trolls.
You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Ruscour's humiliation, while tragic, probably saved quality-seeking subscribers. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves subscribers. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about in guild-chat, you want me in those tubes, you need me in those tubes.
We use terms like noob, barbarian, linguistically-challenged idiot. We use these terms as the backbone of a life spent ridiculing the inarticulate and unthinking. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a forum moderator who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very trolling that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it!
I would rather you just said thank you, and went on editing others' posts. Otherwise, I suggest you log into an alt, and draft a biting post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think your tubes are connected to!
