Hi, from a new player.

Sep 19, 2010 Paris link
Hello everyone. \o

After enjoying my 8 hour free trial, I have decided to subscribe and see how the game unfolds.
I think it's amazing that just four people have put this very fun game together, and think congratulations are in order.

May I ask if there are any plans to add a sensitivity control for joysticks in the windows version, I ask purely because my joystick works so well I cannot hold it still enough to shoot the baddies. :)

Thank you.

Hi Paris and welcome to Space Crack. Although there is not an option in the GUI to set the deadzone of your joystick, it is possible to change this setting manually. If you goto where you installed VO (presumably c:\program files\vendetta online) you will find a file called config.ini. Open this file with your favourite text editor, find the section that looks like [Your joystick name here] and look for the below values:

(some axis)axismindeadzone=-10
(some axis)axisdeadzone=10

Play with these values to find a sweet spot :) replace (some axis) with x, y, z, rz, etc :)

Than you very much yodaoborg, I have changed those settings you shown me to '20' and will now see how my over active joystick fairs. :)

Welcome to VO, Paris.

ty. :D

Well, I have tried many different numbers but my joystick is still why to over-active once it gets to a certain point. Maybe I will try using the keys or something.

Welcome to VO, Space Crack, Space Quake... etc... etc... et al.

I've tried a few flight sticks/game pads for VO, Yoda trick seems to work for most but, sadly there are some out there that are just rubbish. I've actually had decent luck with Logitech... (which is odd, because Logitech is generally rubbish.).

Trackpad and keyboard is all you need.

Mice ftw.

I have resorted to mouse and keyboard and am slowly getting use to it, shame about the joystick though, I hope they fix it for windows one day.

Anyway I am having fun that's the main thing, funny how I had never heard of this little gem until spotted on the mmorp site. :)

In windows you can also use the built-in joystick configuration stuff. XP had a "Joysticks" thing in control panel where you could calibrate and such. I have no idea where it is in Windows 7, since they moved everything around.

I'm also not sure that that will help with defining a wider dead zone. I haven't personally seen the sort of problem you describe. Our game has been tested (by us, personally) with a pretty wide array of joysticks from Logitech, Saitek, Gravis, Thrustmaster, and so on. Our input config UI is pretty horrifyingly bad, but I'm surprised the fundamental config options aren't working for you.

All that said, I use a mouse+keyboard too.

Welcome to VO :).

there is a joystick company named thrustmaster? lol

My joystick is a Microsoft sidewinder 2 and although it is very accurate, I find while playing VO , the slightest touch sends it flying across the screen. It just needs slowing down somehow.

I did alter my dead-zone, but all that done was have me needing to push it a bit further before it went flying across the screen. :)

The joystick config in window 7 allows calibration only, there are no options for dead-zone or sensitivity, trust Microsoft. :)

It's not a large problem though, when I am playing VO I forget such trivia and just have fun. :D

You've probably tried this, but if you haven't, make sure that when you launch your ship you move the joystick through its full range of motion before trying to fly around with it. With my joystick (Logitech Force 3D Pro in Linux) I need to do that the first time I launch in a session, otherwise it's all wonky. Seems to be a self-calibration deal.

Joysticks do not have any ramp on them - Digital sticks are particularly bad about this and really could use something like the key ramp. I havent had any problems using true analog sticks. Perhaps you are useing a game pad or a digital stick?

I'm clearly not a joystick player, but I would think this sort of thing would be normally addressed in drivers or config programs specific to the device. Analog joysticks do have a kind of "ramp", due to their nature, any digital replacement would need to replicate this somehow. I'm kinda surprised MS doesn't have any config options.

If it's a simple digital gamepad, then that would make sense, those tend to be 100% off or on, regardless of the stick angle. I tried playing Tie Fighter with a Gravis Gamepad back in the day; that was horrific.

Do you have the "Sidewinder Precision 2"? A-la this?

We can check into this issue, down the road, but probably not in the immediate future; our plate is a bit too full right now.

Yes Incarnate, that is the joystick I am using. I have a lot of trouble just getting it to point at a large asteroid.

I understand that problems like this must take their place behind things like the terrible bug hunt, after all, there are probably not that many people who own unruly joysticks.

Could you are anyone else recommend a good joystick that works well with VO and windows 7, It would be worth the few pounds if it made my game even more enjoyable. :)

@Pizzasgood. Ty, I will give that a try.

My knowledge of joysticks is well out of date, but we've had pretty good luck with Logitech units. Considering the nature of this issue though, I'd wait for some specific recommendations from our joystick-using constabulary.

Welcome to a great game and game community.

For what it's worth... I have been using the Logitech Freedom 2.4 Cordless Joystick - 10 button with out a problem.
