How do i use this forum ? [text formatting specifications]

Sep 06, 2010 PaladinOfLancelot link
Hello,

Can somebody please post (and pin it so its visible for everyone, for God's sake) this forum's usage manual somewhere ?

I forgot again how to insert pictures in-text, how to make proper hyperlinks, italic font, bold, strikethru etc.

BTW,
Converting this forum to normal PHPBB, SMF, vBulletin or IPB would really do a HUGE favour to everyone here.

Converting this forum to some PHP crap would not do a favor to us at all, as those forums are drastically less scalable, have frequent security issues and would require a lot of time to integrate with the rest of our site.

Anyway, remove spaces from below examples for use:

Bold: [ b ]Bold[ /b ]
Italic: [ i ]Italic[ /i ]
Awesome Url: [ url=http://www.vendetta-online.com ]Awesome URL[ /url ]
Embedding image: [ img ]http://url.to.image[ /img ]

how can you not figure out how the forum works but claim you could write the code for a 3d radar?

Simple. I do not want to _figure out_ how a forum works, because i don't have time for that.

There was a post earlier about how-to-use-this-forum, but as the vendetta forum search algorithm doesn't work at all for older posts, i can't find it.

[[[some PHP crap]]]

This "some php crap" has 10 x as many features as this forum, guess what: the search ACTUALLY WORKS, everybody knows how to use it, and also it has another magic thing which is missing on this forum: POLLS.

By the way: what is the point of having a suggestion forum without polls ? Oh my gosh.

Google search works best for the VO fora. See, problem already solved.

Please feel free to demonstrate your disapproval by not using it until it's changed to how you want it..

Oh, I'm not the one that started criticizing. Ask "the php crap" guy.

The search function works fine, you gotta know how to use it also. Just follow the instructions.

Paladin, I'm going to assume you have never administered a forum using the software(s) you mentioned, because it can be a nightmare. Do not get me wrong, I use SMF all the time for varous forums I host on the Internet, but over years I've had so many problems with updates, security holes, and spammers in general. The devs don't want to be looking through MySQL dumps to find that malicious code that got injected, nor do they want to be moderating thousands of spambots, they want to be making VO better, not the damned forums.

Here is an example of what can happen to an SMF forum if left unattended http://skv.vo-noobs.com/ - this forum was neglected, not popular and not kept upto date. It had like 10 users, and didn't have any public boards, yet somebody still came along and took it out for me (how nice!). So when he said PHP Crap, I do not think that he was implying this forum is better, just better for them. Now STFU and go play VO.

While I'll grant that simple things like italics and what-not would actually have been faster to discover via trial and error than by posting a thread, it still makes sense for him to ask in case there are also fancier ones that might be accepted by the forum.

Regarding the 10x features: So what? Features = complexity = more ways to break. Do we need avatars, friends/foes, PMs, embedded video, etc.? Not really. I can see where polls might be nice, but you have to remember that polls are very restrictive, and this isn't a democracy. I much prefer the system we have, where people are more inclined to post opinions than simple votes, and where there aren't proper polls that constrain discussion. A thread with a poll at the top is more likely to be more constricted than the same thread without the poll. You don't get as many "Well, your idea is good, but what about tweaking it like this?" posts. And if you did get those posts, the poll would quickly become obsolete because new options would need to be added - making the previous votes invalid.

Just my thoughts.

Why must a simple request turn so negative? Admittedly I don't care for having another user speak for me, but this really didn't need to turn into an argument.

I'm locking this, and I will make a clean thread to sticky.

My 'PHP crap' comment was not intended as some sort of personal affront to PoL. I understand his frustration, but no, I don't have a very high opinion the general state of commonly-used forum software. Yes, they do have a zillion more features. That's actually part of why we avoided them in the first place. But Yoda's example is exactly what I mean, I don't have the administrative time to keep watch over most of those products.

We will probably have the default forum search box use Google when we launch the new website.

Any addition of polling and the like will also tie into the game itself.. only a small percentage of players use the forum, so forum-only polls are not that useful as a picture of what players want.
