Is there any purpose to mining and trader aside from making credits?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm curious how mining or trading effects the world. I have only played a couple days but I hadn't really noticed any real change aside from stations paying you less for trading the same thing to them over and over. If anyone with more experience could enlighten me on the finer points of how this all works, I'd be very grateful. :)

Well, you can increase your standing with them, which in turn can give you the chance to get special versions of ships or equipment. And you'll have the comfort of knowing that if you get attacked within their waters, you'll be defended, or avenged, at least to some extent.

It'll probably also bring you in contact with pirates, which can be a lot of fun (if you're stoic of mind).

Not Yet is the short answer.

That is what I figured. I just wanted to make sure. Is there anything that would suggest this would change in the future, or is this as good as it gets?

Economy redux is nearing implementation (weeks, months, years... we don't have any idea), so it will change in some way at some point.

A reply to the above post would have been funny if my account name was Soon(tm) as well....

And we had a big revamp, just before a stopped playing the first time... ok, this was beta to release client but still...

Thank you for the quick responses. I guess for now I'll keep working on becoming better at both til this "Near Future(tm)" comes to pass. Sadly I am horrible at combat, as my twitch skills aren't what they used to be, so the calmer side of life is the one I will be choosing.

Some items need mining to get them but if corvus has it you can usually get around this.

I got level 2 mining the first week mining was invented then got bored and never did it again and i'm fine

Hmm, Define point. Look, you pay your sub and you play in any way that suits you. If you find doing a bit of trade and mining a pleasant experience, then so be it. If you enjoy exploring and finding interesting and aesthetically pleasing sectors a joy , then so be it. If you want to fight the hive , fine . If you want to do loads of pvp , well, why not, it is a combat game.

The attraction of VO is that no-one sets the objectives. A few weeks into the game you will see how it all works, at that point you play how you wish to play , and you will rarely be interrupted.

Limited crafting already exists. Future plans include expanding crafting to include the need to mine (or otherwise obtain) resources in order to build items. "Not yet" is probably the most accurate answer so far.

There is always the possibility that once the revamped economy comes out, stations will need certain resources to repair your ship, sell you a ship, sell you a weapon, etc...

Recently, I found that mining can be very very interesting on gray space...

It is just like an covert mission, or some infiltration. You must keep alert all time, have quick reactions, so on... way more intense and challenging than botting...

Yesterday night I was mining in sedina... got a few pirates mad on me, hunting, bitching a lot... FUN!!

Be stealth, preferably invisible. Keep eye open, you must evade before pirate nears you. Be quick, and learn to multi-jump, and dock in hot. And be ready to sacrifice your cargo for speed.

Same applies to trade.

Without pirates and rogue bots, mining and trade would be very boring indeed, after you visited most sectors with roids.

Also it extends a lot the "discovery stage", Feed the Columbus in you.

"be ready to sacrifice your cargo for speed" yes yes always drop your cargo make sure to drop all of it to lighten the load as much as possible.
