I think you have wasted your time. The original looks most like ice. Please add game content.

Well, I took a look at the new ice and I prefer the old style, at least that looks like ice.

Bring back the old ice I say.

Edit: I suppose I can get used to it though.

Part of content is immersion, being part of a believable online world. If you read the news post carefully you would see the old ice was much too bright for the environment. The key sentence is Now the ice can be bright in bright sectors, but dark in dark sectors.

This is about creating atmosphere. I'll admit I didn't know what to think when I first logged on, except that I'll get used to it. If by content you mean new sectors, places to explore, ships, weapons, etc... what's the point if it all looks the same?

If you don't care about attention to detail, then

Once you're up close the ice looks really really cool, a lot more like ice than the previous version. You really have to be ingame to experience it, because a screenshot doesn't do it justice.

it looks bad from fr really blurry and pixelated.

I think the new ice looks good, it takes some getting used to, especially when looking at it from a distance.

And I agree with Phaserlight.

The old ice looked like something wrapped in crazy aluminum foil. The new ice actually looks remotely like ice. As I said in the post, and as Slime added, screenshots do not really show the new ice at all. I'm sorry to hear some people don't like it. We will not be "bringing back" the old ice. You can disable or degrade the client shader version to see the fallback, if you prefer.

We did work on gameplay content as well, this week, the same stuff that's in the lengthy newspost from the 11th. It isn't ready for release yet.

It does look cool, and I like the reflection thing even though it seems it was an unintended effect. Dont remove it!

Oh I did. I especially enjoyed the part about "in theory, by Friday we will hopefully have some cool detail-textured asteroids for you all to check out" or that "This graphics update is not very lengthy or time consuming" and was "already half finished" and yet is apparently not yet completed.

So, uh, when are we going to get some actual game content?

it would be nice to be able to switch from to the new style ice to the old style ice for those of us that do not like the update

While I can see why some loved the old ice compared to the new, just play around for a bit. It will get to you and you'll enjoy it. Not to mention, now that it's more transparent with lights and the background, you can trick people in pvp to accidentally smash into it. :D

Should have a sector so filled with ice and a black background that you have to fire some weapons in front of you to find the path to the lone "ice" station that's at the end of the tunnel. Ooooooo...maybe some new races in huge ice fields were there are a million paths(and dead ends of course) while you try and find the exit :) I could see some fun PvP in this idea. Of course, I'll just wait at the exit and flare whom ever comes out first :P

Impavid: It's okay man, content is coming. Just have to play the waiting game for a bit more. :) Plus, would you want broken new content or working new content? :P

Haha, StarFreeze, that reminds me of Titan A.E. That actually sounds really cool. There could be a pirate station hidden in a thick ice sector that you can only find if you know where to look in the ice field.

The screenshot in the thread about the update is better than the one here, but even with just the one here, I like the new ice. The old ice was pretty, but it's true it looked more like crinkly aluminum foil than ice. This is a big improvement, and yes, it really is game content, so be quiet all you complainers. When I first joined this game I actually spent quite a lot of time practicing flying by strafing different asteroids as close as I could to their surface, which took a long time to get old because the textures were so fun to look at. Graphics are part of real game content.

Now if a mining beam could be modified to make shaved ice, and it came in different flavors....

Oh fucking please--just admit that this happened to get done first and move on. There is ZERO justification for this being a priority over content/plot/anything that might possibly make this mid-90's multiplayer shooter into something that will go somewhere, rather than limping on to its demise in the next 24 months.

Nobody really wanted ice, but it's sorta pretty. Sure. Whatever. No big deal, given all the other years of delays. Just don't try and spin this as being even remotely important.

just play around for a bit. It will get to you and you'll enjoy it.

Really. You will enjoy it. Because you have no choice anyway.

I didn't get the sense that it was a priority, I was responding to those who were suggesting the old ice was better.

It's funny how some players automatically assume that whatever gets implemented somehow detracted from development on all other aspects of the game and feel the need to rant about what the devs should have spent their time on when they have no reasonable way of knowing this unless they are stalking them 24/7. When did this get started? Hopefully the devs see there's no way these players will ever be satisfied and focus on developing the game according to their own vision.

Heres your bottle everyone *hands over bottle*

Would you like to be burped too?
Aug 02, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
Phaser, I'm pretty sure that, at this point, most players would be satisfied with developing the game, regardless of whose vision was involved.

I pretty much stopped playing in October 2007 due to work, and I bought two 24 month subs at that time. As they're coming up on their expiration dates now, I look around and see very little change in terms of what would make for a popular, successful game. There has been change, to be sure, but not the kind that addresses VO's major flaws.

This is just my opinion, of course; perhaps, "SOON!," there will be a massive uptick in the player base to prove me wrong. At this point, my main curiosity is what the 4 man Dev team's end game is. Seriously, you four have devoted quite the chunk of your life to VO, and none of you are getting any younger. Is VO really going to be around for us to play three years from now?
