Trial feedback summary - Kanosh
Hi, I've completed my 16h trial of the game over roughly one week, my main character is Kanosh. Now I have to decide whether to subscribe. It's about an even choice. Because I'm well off and looking for an alternative to WoW I'll probably subscribe to see how the game evolves. If the cost was significant to me or I was content with my current game I probably wouldn't.
Here's the top 5 things that make me want to subscribe to Vendetta:
- It captures the essentials of the genre into a small and elegant game. It avoids the excessive complexity or unneeded mechanisms found in games like EvE.
- It's made by a small company and is evolving. I'm interested in game design and I've had a very positive experience from this type of developer with the web-based game Battlemaster.
- The combat mechanics are very direct and skill-based, rather than the excessive point & click found in EVE. This is rewarding.
- Tiled windows, and in general a UI that's designed well by the developers makes the game more user friendly than a screen full of floating windows and add-ons.
- The cost of levelling, acquiring ships, and dying is low, which is friendly to new players and avoids the excessive grind of other MMOs.
And here's the bottom 5, the things that make me not want to subscribe;
- It feels lonely. I play an MMO when I'm physically lonely and want to play with people online. WoW excels in this and EVE is so-so. During my trial I participated in only one multiplayer experience, because I happened to log in in time for a "nation war" event.
- There seems to be very little to do. I did some training missions and now I have more training missions, all solo, which is boring. WoW provides places to see and NPCs with varied quests. Like EVE, everything in Vendetta is a sector that looks like any other where you kill something.
- The main activity of stable players seems to be PvP. That kills games, or rather PvP is the point where the content dries up and the game does not evolve. It seems that this has happened way too early, like you were trying to build Half-Life and got Counter-Strike.
- Extended play of dogfight combat is fun but makes me dizzy. That may be to do with the perspective, debris, etc. or it ay be unavoidable for this game design. I suggest this is not very mass-market friendly.
- The finishing quality of some aspects of the UI, particularly sounds and fonts, is poor. This grates on the player every time and reduces the enjoyment of the game. Great games have very polished audio and text/UI.
So, thanks for the trial, I may watch the game evolution, but would not join the game as an average player at this stage in its development.

We really don't want to know when you're "physically lonely" in the real world, but welcome to the game anyway.
Also, thank you for writing in complete sentences and good grammar, and for a well thought-out and organized post instead of just rambling with half-completed words.

Well, let me put it another way. If friends or family are available I'd be with them in the real world. If not, I play an MMO. An MMO should make it easy to meet and interact with others. Fantasy MMOs have it much easier than sci-fi MMOs in this respect, because of the way the avatars and the world looks.
I agree with your points.
As for the lonely factor, your biggest option is to join a guild. As for being bored, join a guild that roleplays. If I had not, I would have bheen bored after about three to four months of PvPing and moved on. Instead, I stayed for two years.

Nice post. Not much to disagree with, either. Keep an eye on the newsposts from the developers regarding items in your bottom 5 list.
This is a superb post and one of the areas that I would like to make reference to is something that the development crew can not fix. That is the user base issues by doing group stuff. From this I gather we need more events like the nation war and deneb run, perhaps make at least one event every day. So any takers?
Haha, that sounds better, Kanosh.
I agree with most of your points. The dizziness factor is, I think, unavoidable if you want to truly have free movement through space. I remember when Descent was a big deal way back when, and there was one particular level (I can't remember which) that was the only time I've ever gotten queasy looking at a screen. People who get motion sickness easily usually avoid these games in general. Fixing this problem would cripple combat in this game.
The UI, as everything else, is a work in progress. I like the concept they're going for, but agree that it is still rough. It kind of has a Windowsy feel to it, at least coming from the perspective of a Mac user who likes streamlined, intuitive interfaces. It works, though, so no major complaints here. (Although a skin that makes it look like MacOSX would be cool... hint hint Lord~Spidey.)
Yes, blacknet, I'd love to see more of that. At the moment, all I look forward to in-game is nation war (most fun I've ever had in this game was my first nation war, major adrenaline rush!) and CtC. Sadly, it's hard for me to make it to nation war, I always have something I have to do. Oftener nation war would be awesome, but if it's too often I fear we'd spread it thin, and fewer would participate in any given event. I guess we're back to needing more players....

trial feedback
for a moment there that looked freakishly déjà-vu.

I also agree with the points above. Hopefully we can address some of them over the coming months.
I just went through the trial as well and would like to offer my remarks, in conjunction with Kanosh. I played Eve for over 3 years and recent quit. Mostly due to the fact that everything about the game is now PvP. It's not possible to exist in the Eve environment without getting ganked, unless you remain with one of the noob factions.
Anyway, I'm very interested in Vendetta to see where it is headed. I think the use of physics in flight is great. Thus far I'm enjoying doing some mining and taking out some Hive ships. It would be nice to have more things to locate and explore farther away from the stations. And I think the ability to establish an outpost would be pretty cool.
Overall, for what a small group is accomplishing, VO is pretty impressive. I for one will stay with it for awhile and see what happens.

Whenever you're lonely, go to Sedina b8...
For "little to do" I always decide on one of three things before I log in. 1) Combat - then I either bot or PvP. 2) Trade. 3) Mine (and either engage in verbiage or maintain radio silence).
As for combat, there are several varieties: consensual PvP, non-consensual PvP, CtC, pirating and PvE.
To eliminate the "dizzy" factor while in combat, turn your background off (/set background 0)
As others have said, the UI is very fluid and constantly improving. Try to toy with the settings and see if some of them change things more to your liking.

Haha, non-consensual PvP sounds dirty.
