Remove the three special ships....
Hi, here's another idea (originally from Lin) which would balance the game much more - and make it more interesting. Furthermore, it would be more like the final special ship idea the devs have got and it would also make interesting mission:
Remove all three specials ships from the nations, so each nation has got the same ships.
The special ships (and maybe including a couple new special ships) should be only available on *different* blackmarkets - each blackmarket would sell one special ship.
To get the special ship, you'd have to do something - for example: "Bring me 12 nanites from sector 18 and you can get a marauder" "Destroy the three wings surrounding our station and you can buy a valk" etc.
Since it would be much harder to get the special ships, they could be beefed up - restoring the old, "unbalanced" prom, giving the valk 18k hull points, giving the marauder 1 large weapon port and 2 small one, etc.
Another idea like this: special weapons, only obtainable using the idea above.
I think this could be really fun - you'd have to work hard to get a special ship and you'd have to take care of it - because it wouldn't be so easy getting another one.
As a positive side-effect, the nations would be balanced - it wouldn't be a matter of chosing the nation just because of the nation's special ship.

Sounds like 3.1 except with missions.
I like the idea of making people *earn* special ships...

If this were possible you could remove the nation specific ships and place them in a hidden sector. This way no nation has a super ship, nations are 100% balanced ship wise, any one and everyone could own & use these ships, provided they can get to them and return home.

Hmmm, a thought...
The nation specific ships - are they nation specific at the moment? I could imagine that it would level out things if for an example:
If Centaurs were tweaked more against being a trading ship, instead of a miner/nuker. Changes to it could be more agility, - 1 largeport, + 1 smallport, and maybe an extra inch of hull =).
As for fighters, i could say a thing on the hornet - but i wont survive the flaming it would cause ;) Instead i'll just say, a 3 * small port, good agility (eg. alittle better than marauder), low cargo normal figther would be a good alternative for the valk.
Further more, for all of this to make just alittle sence =) - the nation specifics should be what the name implies, Nation Specific. Only avaible to other nations though (As posted by CJ) missions of a really hard degree. Making them "special" to get hold of. The reason why i proposed ship tweaking for this idea, is that people are always quick to find a way getting easy around such missions (if it's not a large system installed at once =D). This way, what they actually earn by doing a mission, is a ship with a inch better agility(valk) / couple of extra cargo spaces(Marauder) or the abillity to carry a Large weapon(prom), all of them ofcause with a little extra hull, than the normal alternatives of ships...
AND then the-bus-with-no-weapons-and-unequipable-engine-goin-180m/s-without-turbo explorer ship %D
(Just kidding... could be fun though, it just shouldn't be able to cap =)

Do not remove the special ships...
...But do remove the black market...
...remove them or don't remove the black market...
...but do make black market ships cost more and limited availability...
...and if (when) you do remove the black market, make sure the prom is of some value...
Don't remove the black market until all the issues with all the ships have been ironed out...it's really there for testing purposes, not story issues.
Rather than have the black market maybe we should be able to capture enemy ships? Don't know how it would work but then I'll be able to get myself a nice alien ship ... oh yes.
