my first character didnt reach combat 1 till he was at trade 3 or 4 i think, not sure but he had a wraith the first time he tried botting
The Tutorial test mission gets you combat 1.
PTT still won't save on my computer, same with Transmission level. Still have to use /lua VoiceChat.SetPTTMode(true) to enable it.
Can I add the VoiceChat.SetPTTMode(true) line to my config file? Or is it something different?

You can't add that command to your config.ini unfortunately. We discovered the problem with the PTT saving, but ran into something odd with our patch system. One way or another, that fix will go out within the next day or so.
Aye , good progress. Voice chat seems fine on OS X now.
Good news: Poking around in the voice chat options no longer makes VO crash! Hurray for error handling!
Not so good news: Voice chat still isn't working on my system. You all get another week without my fabulous singing.

I really dislike the tutorial mission limitation. It's an especially bad front to new players trying to see beyond the grind when considering subscribing to VO IMO.
I think a good compromise is to only have the tutorials visible, but a check box to activate other missions. When you click the box, you get a warning that if you're new you should do the tutorials first, before asking questions.
It takes like half an hour to run through the tutorials, of a 16-hour trial, and the new user will be a hell of a lot more informed for having done them. All the players who fly off somewhere and have no idea how to get back, or do understand how to fly around and end up trading through grayspace (and get pirated/killed, and don't understand why), or take combat missions and have no idea how to fight and get frustrated with the combat.. none of them end up terribly happy either. And there are a whole lot of them.
All MMOs have a learning curve, and ours is steeper than most. I don't think 30-45 minutes of learning about the game is too excessive, especially if you're here to.. learn about the game. If you're really superfly, you can jump right to the Basic Flight Status test and get on with it.

I think its a good thing Inc. So yeah.
If you are superfly the Basic Flight Status takes a few minutes, I guess you aint tried it?

I haven't done the training missions in years, and I'm not likely to have any alts in the near future if ever, I was just thinking of a compromise for people who like to make alts. It is a good idea, though, and between the two extremes I'd rather people were made to do the training, so they aren't frustrated later. It's a good change, I think.
Just went through the training missions for the first time yesterday, and thought they were all very well-made and educational, except for the next-to-last mission. That particular mission consists of following a convoy of NPC ships around while one of the NPCs talks at you... and there's really nothing to do but sit there and read. I kept waiting for the convoy to be jumped by bad guys or something, anything more interesting. Then the mission is buggy at the end, so I couldn't complete it.
Other than that one bad experience, the other training scenarios have just the right level of difficulty for a brand spanking new rookie, and seem to be a decent introduction to the game. I agree that limiting the new player to only the training missions is a very good idea; you don't want to overwhelm the newbies with learning the entire game all at once. Do that and they won't stick around to pay. :)

Winter Owl: what happened to you at the end of the mission? I've had a few sporadic reports of that mission not completing right, but no details.. and every time I've tried it personally, it worked without issue. Where did you take it, for one thing?

There's my report on the bug, and a couple other people's as well.
Still, this is a fun game. :)

Thanks, I fixed the problem. Glad you're enjoying the game :).
