Warthog Remodel

Well, seeing as I'm distracted by the hellatious nature that is getting the polycount of the new cent down, this has somewhat taken a back seat. Here's what she currently looks like.

Critique away, I'll listen and implement when I get back to it. And if you think it does not at all fit the current 'Hog/the game/what-have-you, that's fine, I'll likely do another. Finishing this will likely be for personal enjoyment(I certainly like it) and for those that DO like it.

I get the feeling you are going about it the wrong way, centering the ship on the gat turret while most hogs don't use them

Thats...not bad, actually.

The cockpit could still look a little more protected, the 'wings' are a bit stubby, and, as always, a higher poly count would be more than welcome, but you seem to be getting the hang of this. The craft definitely seems very "Warthog", but keeps well away from the BSG factor. Good job.

If you'd lose the specificity of the main gun, I'd actually get behind your final design replacing the Hog frame. It has turned out much better than the inital design looked... mainly because I saw the fore and aft reversed (hence the inital confusion with the guppy shaped Renevant).

I'd say taper, rather than flare, the nose... just not as much as the current Hog design.

I ran across this and can't resist sharing. My favorite modern plane and my favorite historical plane side-by-side. Awesome.

It's kind of on topic, since one's a Warthog, right? I got to see Mustangs fly last weekend, very cool.

Wow, okay, sounds like this mesh might work after all.

I intend to make multiple variants of the nose, the GAU knockoff is just one such variant(the one that happens to get me hot and bothered). The more pedestrian version will have generic gunports.

Don't worry about the cockpit. I have a very specific plan to make it look quite armored. :) Hint: Think Hunchback cockpit armor. If you get that reference, you have too much time on your hands.

I'm not sure what to do about the wings. They're supposed to be stubby - they're load-carrying wings, a holdout from her yesteryears as a civvie craft. They'd be perfect with some external ord, but... Oh well.

Chaos, I'd like the -51 a lot more if it didn't have all that fuel sloshing around on a half-empty tank. Full load, or near empty, she's a great plane. I'm a P-38 man myself. Love to have a instant turn ability to hang with the Zeros, and zoom climb rates that make 109s wish they were never born. And if a Runstang or Run90 want to play their game, that's fine, I'll climb back up to 40k and wait for their buddys to come by.

P-38 is a pretty sweet plane, too. I also like the Spitfire. It's amazing how some of those guys flew hundreds of miles home with practically a scrap of cloth left on the wing frame. I'm still a fan of the Mustang, though (but not the car, at least not post-1970 or so).

An interesting note, I was just reading, and apparently in the operator manual for the Mustang it actually says to never ever ditch the plane, and specifically says it will float for only two seconds. Apparently that scoop on the bottom made it dive even faster than other planes, who already were toast pretty quickly due to that heavy engine in front.

A note on your Warthog, I think possibly the gun should be scaled down just a bit. It's a bit big relative to everything else, and that would help you scale down the nose, too.
