Ok, I have a Mac PowerBook G4, 1.5 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM and what i believe is an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro video card with 128 MB VRAM. Running OS X 10.3.9
With graphics set to highest and targetLS refresh rate at 1.5 secs my fps was averaging about 4.
I tried setting everything to the absolute lowest, shut of glow and everything and set targetLS to refresh every 10 secs and i still never topped 10 fps.
Am I just out of luck?

I think at least part of the cause of extremely low FPS is the massive amount of cargo/scrap metal being spawned from so many NPCs dying.
Yes, we need to work on the Too Much Cargo Problem. That makes things really slow.
Possible solutions: make the cargo timeout extra fast, or cap the number of cargo boxes in a sector (as new ones spawn, old ones are forced to disappear). And perhaps just not drop scrap metal if there's already too much in the sector, and maybe more aggressively combine dropped cargo, like instead of creating a new cargo box with your weapon, just increment the quantity of one that's dropped nearby.
Other suggestions?

I like the idea of combining dropped cargo, but what about dropping "boxed" units that contain several different items inside them?
For example, an NPC SVG might drop an N3 and 2cu of scrap. Instead of dropping two distinct crates, drop one crate that has both objects in it. If the ship picking up the combo-crate doesn't have space for both (different!) items, prioritize the items the player already has in his or her hold. (If the player has an X-1 Valk with one N3 already picked up, put the N3 from the combo-crate into the Valk's hold and leave the scrap behind.) In cases where the player has both types of items in their hold already but only has room for one, prioritize the more 'expensive' one, perhaps by checking the 'base' price of the item.

can you make it so that they dont drop any cargo, only in that sector?
