Flogged to death, I'm afraid.
Shouldn't need to say hi in order to shoot.
Ahoy: This was once the dreaded war cry of the Vikings. It is now used as a distinct nautical hail.

Most historical references are nautical in nature and don't necessarily acquaint themselves to well-wishing.
In Vendetta-Online, the nautical nature of the hail is most evident as two ships meet. If not meeting, it is just chat.
This can take three distinct, separate meanings:
1. a greeting,
2. a challenge,
3. a notification of presence.
If we look at these three meanings, there are separate interpretations receiving pilots can make:
1A. Someone is saying hello to me;
1Aa. Hi,
1Ab. Hello,
1Ac. Greetings, etc...
1Ad. Hello from the [TGFT] Mothership-High profits to you!, etc...
1B. Someone is asking my condition, purpose or intentions;
1Ba. How are you?,
1Bb. What's new?,
1Bc. How's your mom?, etc...
1Bd. What are you doing?,
1Be. What are you going to do to me?, etc...
2A. Someone is telling me to do something;
2Aa. Drop your cargo,
2Ab. Meet me in D14,
2Ac. Go to hell,
2Ad. Eat my swarms!!, etc...
2B. Someone is telling me what they are going to do;
2Ba. I'm going to BP,
2Bb. I'm going to mine some Denic, etc...
2Bc. I'm going to bed,
2Bd I'm going to blow the living shit out of you for that!, etc...
2C. Someone is telling me to do something and if I don't, what they are going to do to me;
2Ca. Pay me 1,000,000c or you're dead meat!,
2Cb. Drop your cargo or face my wrath,
2Cc. Stop the spamming or you're out of the guild, etc...
2D. Someone wants to fight (with my permission or without my permission);

that guy to the right reminds me of a little kid getting sleepy at a play his parents dragged him to.
I should say a great many politician feels that way.
Hail (noun) - an informal greeting of intent that keeps you from getting immediately swarmed and blown to bits.
