"...if you can organize a campaign to fight for control of a resource rich area and drive an enemy out and claim the spoiles (better roids, better npc bots etc.)"
actually since rock heat up as you mine them if you can keep other miners away for a while you can mine roids till they become so hot mining them isn't worth it.

i stopped actively trying to play roughly a year back, had my subscription ticking silently and wasnt playing, now the subscription has stopped as well and i havent bothered to renew
because, at some point bothunting to gain weapons skills got hugely tedious ( my licences are 4/5/3/2/2 ) and i didnt really find much else to do in a way of missions.
did i miss anything ?

PVP, the main part of Vendetta. That's what you're missing....
While pvp can be fun (provided you dont have latency issues...), it's by no means a way to up your levels.
It's more the icing on the cake.
Most people level up to ~12 after wich everything stagnates.
Missions are (/where) the way to go, like BP and BS. And of course HS.
But even that gets tedious at some point. For raw entertainment, player-ran events are still the best thing for now.

well, i have latency issues , not because my net connection sucks but the route to vendetta server(s?) is like 30 hops.
i guess im not the target market for MMOs anyway, whereas i have played practically every singleplayer PC space shooter out there. FreeSpace2 and Tachyon multiplayer used to be fun as well ( not too much of timesinks, fun to have a match or two every once in a while )

Hmm how bad's your ping. I'm playing from Australia (when I resubscribe :D) with a ping of over 250. I don't do to bad in PVP even with that ping.
I was around way back in the day (Vendetta Test, CTF, sector 5, etc etc)but it has been almost 2 years since I last played... Maybe it's time to dust off the Valkyrie, paint fresh BLAK markings on my Sunflares and go for a wee hunt...
well...its been about 2 years since ive been active in-game. Guess ill join in on the fun again.. =)

I think the key to losing players lies primarily in the general attitude of the playerbase. Thus, the quickest way, it seems to me, to lower the VO population is to create a sort of stigma surrounding negative aspects about the game. If everyone creates or contributes to a thread on the topic of player losing, for example this might have just the sort of substantial effect we're looking for. That is what we're trying to achieve here, right? Losing players? Or is this topic about *keeping* players? At a glance, it can be difficult to tell.
