Weird graphics...

Jun 14, 2003 Buckaroo link
Hi, in sector 6 I've encountered a strange grey oblong area.. never seen such a strange effect before. I've made two screen dumps:

http://tower.nowiasz.de/dump0000.tga
http://tower.nowiasz.de/dump0001.tga

This grey area didn't grow larger or smaller, no matter in which direction I flew.. after restarting the client this problem was gone. Has anyone experienced this before?

Hardware config here: PowerBook G3/500 2000 (Pismo).

Regards,
Mark (Commander Jameson)

I've had strange gray areas quite often. Textures, for some reason, get corrupted for me any time I switch between full-screen and window mode, and large sections of the screen will become gray or white. It's funky, but I just reload the textures by switching first down one step in resolution, then back up to my own resolution. It's the only solution that I know of.

This first occured for me the day 3.2 is released. It never happened in 3.1.x, and I think the devs broke something in OpenGL support (I'm on Linux). I've told them several times, and filed a coupla bug reports (I think...), but nothing ever happens.

It looks like one of the faces of the skybox got screwed up. Your graphics card may be struggling with memory usage, so you might want to try turning some graphics down to see if that fixes it. I think eventually Vendetta will require at least 16 MB of VRAM (if not more). I believe your pismo only has an 8 MB Rage 128 mobility. I've got a 700 MHz iBook with a 16 MB Mobility Radeon graphics card, and I'm getting a tiny bit of choppiness in s12 and in big battles. So even my system sucks.

Yeah, sometimes the background generation doesn't work properly.
If this happens again. can you immediately exit and check your errors.log and openglerr.log? there should be something in there about "Could not create context" or something.

It confuses me that it does that sometimes since it's an OS thing and not really anything to do with specific video cards. Maybe it ran out of video memory and the OS didn't properly evict other things to make room.

Another problem with the mac version is that Vendetta doesn't seem to use hardware T&L properly with cards that support that, so the cpu ends up doing the work which makes the game much slower. I still need to figure out why.
