make vendetta an Ubuntu supported game?

Jun 09, 2007 bobthebaked link
hi, i was wondering if the devs have thought about making vendetta an ubuntu supported game. this would mean that vendetta would be setup as a game that can be downloaded through the ubuntu add software interface. it could just be another way of getting the game to more people :-)

Didn't Ubuntu and VO have some conflicts, program wise, before? If it still does, I'd say fix that first, but it's still a good idea.

A) Our installer isn't compatible with apt, and really couldn't ever be since it's installed in the user's home directory (although that could be circumvented if the installer were made to store its data in /usr/share/games and be writable by the "games" group. Presuming Ubuntu has such a thing (I know Gentoo does...)

B) VO is closed-source software that can't be downloaded without having previously purchased an account. That's really... not appropriate for Ubuntu, or any other sensible Linux distro

C) It's really, really, really easy to download the game. Like, blindingly. If you can't do it, I'm sorry, but you may be an idiot.

It is a bad idea to install VO via package manager. Well, actually, I found out about VO by looking through Gentoo's portage tree :) But currently my Gentoo has no idea about VO.

Why am I saying so? VO updates itself. Package managers updates all packages. So we come to a situation where VO can be updated by both. It doesn't hurt much, but you will need sometimes to download the whole VO package again.

I chuckled silently at rogue's last sentence.

Roguelazer:

B) Incarnate has stated before that he wants to add a sign up interface to the VO client, confining this problem to the closed-source part. Furthermore, if you look at the Gentoo-VO ebuild, I think that it no longer has any fetch restrictions.

They could just package the updater, install it systemwide and it would download the game files into the home directory.

I don't have any particular problem with being an Ubuntu package (as was noted, we used to be a Gentoo package.. and may be a PC-BSD and Linspire thing someday). However, wouldn't we have to be on one of the more "external" repositories, seeing as how we're closed-source with our own license? I seem to recall ubuntu's main package repositories being very GPL-only.

I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle, and all the installation problems pointed out..

Heh, we have enough exploits with LUA interface already...

If The Guild didn't forget the golden rule of MMO -- "the client is in the hands of the enemy" -- they could easily opensource the client.

The lua is a lot more secure than it used to be, that's for sure. Namely, I can't think of any serious exploits(lawl teleporting) at this very moment.

i thought this game was using some open source code, thats why i thought it would be a natural fit for ubuntu. i just think that since this is one of the few mmo games for linux they really need to drive that home, there are alot of linux geeks out there that need games :-)

The installer doesn't really change often. What people would download and install is the installer. Then the game woudl update itself.

VO could be made to also ask the user to install for himself or system wide, and invoke su or sudo where needed (including updates).

The updater is kind of a crappy way to install the game. It's a pretty slow way to download, and adds load to our update server. I would rather people downloaded a full install and patched it up. It'd be faster for them and better for us.
