New Player sends his greetings
Hello my fellow spacefarers.
Being an avid X2 player I have been waiting for a multiplayer variant. On the ubuntu forums I had stumbled over this game and thought I might give it a chance and must say, it looks very nice.
I had tried EvE but did not like it very much. It was way to corp and mining based game and felt more like a space Version of WoW.
Though from playing the game and reading the message boards I fear that this game might not be what I am looking for. Among other reasons it seems as though the game has to many people rather willing to blow each other up. One of the reasons might be the really low price of ships and components.
Heck I played for a few hours and could buy a small fleet.
Again, I was/am hoping for a X2 like game and if this game is intended to go into that direction, I would really concider staying on.
I hope I am explaining this well enough.
Thanks for listening and keep up the good work!

Blowing stuff up is fun!
Welcome, TheTank.
The game is indeed going in the direction of the X games in terms of persistent content and a wider range of possibilities (crafting, player-owned stations, capital ships), and also throwing in a few twists of its own (NPCs that trade and react to changes in the world, other, nastier NPCs that expand and seize territory, the actual player-driven conquest of territories, dynamic missions that react to different variables, the possibility to affect the world and the storyline permanently). Peak a sneak at the (admittedly a bit glorifying and propagandizing) feature list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendetta_Online that I threw together some time ago.
The economy is also in for a redux, so buy that small fleet right away, because you won't be able to for long ;-)
When it comes to blowing stuff up, however, VO really shines. It is hardcore PvP-based, with little mercy or understanding (and no silly magical protections, such as simply not being able to attack in some areas. The exception is friendly fire protection between members of the same nation with friendly standing, but that is being removed slowly, piece by piece, as we write.) It is brutal, swift, nasty, and quite unforgiving.
And it's absolutely luverly! I'm not telling you this to keep you away, but instead to reel you in by the piratey hook. You see, the reason the blowing up part is so good, is that Vendetta features the best PvP action I've ever seen, and possibly the most entertaining combat mechanics I've come across (including all those great fighting games that used to be the epitome of player versus player action. Not that they are part of the same genre at all, but a good duel in VO is more exciting than a great match against a skilled opponent in Soul Calibur 3).
So, while the blowing up by and of your fellow man might be tempered by drastically increased equipment and ship prices, I've no doubt that it will remain. But if you give it a chance, you'll never ever let an innocent trader go by unharmed again...

Thanks for the reply!
Oh I have no problem with the blowing up of stuffs, but like I said, it has the hint of a more WoW style 'what does death really matter to me' and I fear it might turn into a FPS like 'spawn-kill-die-spawn' game.
I have seen quite a few nice games go from intended as a merchant with occasional combat into an all out brawl. The devs did not want to change the games because they feared of losing players. Funny thing was, it turned off/drove away the players, like myself, that were looking for just such a game.
@you'll never ever let an innocent trader go by unharmed again...
That is something I would not mind, but only if it fits into the game. If you are a pirate, then it is np but you will be treated like a pirate. No one, 'cept pirate-bases, will let you enter and you will be hunted.
Though a problem would be if death does not cost anything. If I were a pirate and knew that people were after me for a bounty and the worst thing that could happen would be to lose my ship, I'd by a cheap ship and just sit somewhere in public and wait.
Then it would be good to be able to set out a bounty for the ship as well.. hehe.
@New stuff planned:
I for one would LOVE to see stuff like X2/X3 has.
Personally I would be against crafting as I have seen (and created) crafting systems and I did not really like how they were done.
Though if it were possible to build a factory and hire people do do the work for you and like, that would be really cool.
And I'd have a ton of ideas for such factories. Well for everything to be honest. ;)
Plus the website-gameserver connection is really cool. With factories and like you could actually control them from outside the game.
I know that the X/X2/X3 makers also want to make something like Vendetta so keep up the good work and beat them.
(personally I'd favour a different pricing system.)
Thanks for listening.

Yes, Vendetta-Online is a game with an excellent FPS-style twitch combat system. It also has an enormous opportunity to do an awesome job with things like crafting, economies, content, etc.
So, while for now it's a neat game, it'll only get better.

This game really is awesome. I've only played for a few days, but I'm really starting to love it. The only thing that I wished would change (and therefore require tertiary changes...) is in agreement with this thread: death should not be so forgivable. Since dying has very little penalty in most cases, I find fighting tooth and nail when i should be running. Still though, this is better than any multiplayer game I've played.
OK I'll be the devils advocate here.. Having a low death penaltyy is not such a bad thing..
I have just come from eve (What, another one? :P) and frankly you can grind away for weeks to get a ship that is gone in 20 seconds, whereapon you have to start all over again. In the meantime the guys you are fighting are stinking rich from their 15 accounts or just scooping the loot you have just dropped and if they lose their ship they just hop into one of their other 15 magna fitted death machines. This is soul destroying. It totally unfriendly to newbies and basicly is a licence for the established player to do whatever they like, as frankly a newb has no chance and the death penalty is negligable for an old player and is utterly horrendous for a new one.
The other effect of it is that the community collapses as people realise this and start trying to make the other guy suffer, and that becomes the aim of the game.
PVP with a low death penalty is fun. PVP with a high death penalty seems good on paper but really means that the player that may not be so hot in PVP or simply not as experianced becomes rapidly shut out of the majority of the game. If he keeps loosing money he simply wont be able to go out for the fun stuff, and if he has to keep grinding he simply won't have the time or oppritunity to become good. Thats basicly whats happened to eve. Look at it and learn from the mistakes.
Just my 2c

To me fighting tooth and nail to see if I can make it this time is when I get the blood pumping. If I survive, fricking awesome, if I die, well then I jump in a new ship, mayvbe change the load out and try again.
p.s. I'll get my revenge someday "*Dentek Collector RK-6785z"

When I was a new player I worked on faction standing via trade missions, and by the time I was done I had enough credits to do PVP for a few months.
Welcome!
The thing I like so much about VO, and the reason I don't play WoW anymore is that in WoW, gear is what defines a player, next to no skill involved, and gear is difficult to get. It takes too much work to be a loser now, thanks blizz.
VO is still dependant on your weapon and ship, ect, but skill plays such a larger role.
Besides, I like being able to make an impact on the game, like universe events and stuff.
I like the kind of content Ion mentioned in his post, that what I play MMOs for!

Himo: stop comparing this game to EvE :P
My kill to death ratio means pretty much nothing to me. I really don't care if I die instead of repairing and most people don't care about others' k/d ratios either. As for the money aspect, I did a few good traderuns and now I have enough money to last me a year or 2.
