To add to CripplePidgeon's point about PS2 controllers:
Xbox controllers are another option. I think the number of buttons and axes is identical.

I play on a notebook. But I don't want to beat up my notebook's keyboard, and I can't stand the mousepad. So I plug in a usb keyboard and mouse. It works fine.

VO ha currntly bork ome ky on my ky bor.

Most notabily WASD ;)

See, now I work in a place that fixes notebooks, I *could* replace my keyboard pretty cheap, but heh, if I press em hard enough, they still work! :P I have played with keys only (sucky, but useable) trackpads (on a dell notebook, Apple does NOT have the claim to trackpads, I have in stock a Toshiba Trackpad from 1992!) a *nipple* as we call Track Points in some of the UK :P A mouse, and my absolute best - a playstation 2 controller. Simaler to the 2 stick setup with less buttons, but is it? You can hover above the keyboard with it in hand and punch keys with yer little digits.

There are lots of ways to play VO, all take a bit of practice...

[edit]

You could even buy a crappy PS2 pad replacement! Like this one http://www.ledshoppe.com/Product/com/CA1009.htm !!! And w00t be l33t!

Another tack for the MX510, paired with a "Linux Kit for PlayStation2" black keyboard. Lovely HMI.
