'Twas the night before War-Day

'Twas the night before War-Day and all through the ship, not one heat pipe was leaking, not one little drip.

The stockings were hung on the flightsticks with care, in hopes that our Great Lady soon would be there.

The guises were tucked in all snug in their cradles, and dreaming of raw biogruel by the ladle.

And I in my blood-red and Ma in her pink, had just settled down for our nightly upsync,

When up on the tophull came sounds of a horde, and I sprang from my bunk, drew my gun, knife and sword.

Away to the airlock I hastily sped, and drew out my sidearm to shoot the thing dead!

The red sun of Helios shone off a roid, and imparted an unearthly glow to the void.

When what to my eyes should pass over the star, but a well-armored Prom bearing standard of war!

With someone at the helm, so deadly and mean that I knew in a moment it must be my queen!

More rapid than Vultures her escorts they came, and she roared through the comm as she called them by name!

"Now Sol! Now Dantia! Now Rhamus! Betheshee!
Now Geira Rutilus! Pyronis, I call thee!

From the first call of battle, the first screaming Fall, 'til Bloody my war-banner hangs over all!"

As frightened before our great army's advance when they first catch a blow from our serrated lance,

so on to the border our forces they flew, and ahead of them all, the Great Lady, So True!

And then with a roaring, I heard on the shield, the clawing and scraping of each guise's heel.

I drew up my longblade and sprang from the door, knowing fear and futility down to my core.

My lady burst in with her banner held high, and I feared in my heart it was my day to die.

She was dressed all in mail, and it shone like a sun, and I stood there immobile, with nowhere to run.

The great spear of war that she held in her hand symbolized Serco might over space sea and land.

But the sharp-toothed smile that stretched ear to ear, let me know that as Serco, I'd nothing to fear.

She lay down her banner beside my hauberks, and without a sole word, she went straight at her work.

She sharpened the blades and stained each edge with red, to resemble the lifeblood I knew they'd soon shed,

And then with a warcry she sprang to the lock, and out into the void, muscles hard as a rock

And the comm crackled once as she warped out of sight: "Happy War-Day to all, and to all a good night!"
