Flying Formation

Nov 29, 2006 drazed link
I Drazed, of the Coalition of Itan, invite all Itani pilots to come join me and learn to fly in formation. I am pretty new to this myself, so I will be learning as much as I may be teaching, but I'd like to learn to fly in formation with other pilots. The possibilities are endless. Fly at birthday parties and special occasions. Show of to noobs the world over. Be in the next community movie production.......

If you or anyone you know is interested, please reply.

Sounds like a bit of fun. Count me in. :)

What sort of time (GMT) do you expect to meet at?

Hehe, there's been a group that tried this before, and it was a little tougher than you might think. But - if I was itani, I'd be all for it...

O wait...

it is virtually impossible to do this unless you have keys that change the camera view... like 'view 6 o clock' , 'view 3 o clock', 'view 9 o clock', 'view up', etc. that was my experience in the old 'warbirds' game.

A few simple additions to the HUD would make this much easier. Even just showing the relative speed between yourself and other objects (like other ships in the formation) would help a lot. This is actually a feature that I'm surprised hasn't been implemented yet. Relative speed is the most important thing in space (and in VO).

To the suggestions forum?

I'm glad to see intrest in this....

ananzi, I think this is quite possible if you know ahead of time what formation you will be flying and have a set course to fly on. You could use astroids or something to plot the course around, the key would be timing and practice.

I will research some formations, draw up some diagrams, and schedual a training time for this if a few more players show interest. Lexicon, have you considered making a tani alt? (that is if you don't already have one ;))? Or we could all make UIT (neutral) alts for this, it would probably be best to start practice in busses anyhow, as I imagine low speed flight would be easier to keep up with at first.

one more detail....

FatStrat85, all players in formation can have the team leader targetted and you get your relative distance :D

We did this in the IDF days. It's... doable. And very initimidating if you see 3+ valks flying in tight formation at you and you don't have any rockets. :-)

For the amateur enthusiast, maybe this book would help.

Look at the 14.95 book at the bottom, or the movie book combo in the middle.
