Nice update. The Cappies are much more interesting now (since the last 2 updates). Good job on the shield tweaks. I can't wait to see what you guys have in store for them next. Are these changes in preparation for player-ownership?

Honestly, my biggest focus is just making the best use of the gameplay we already have, as quickly as possible. So in other words, "quickest time-to-Fun". Our game really has a lot of stuff, but much of it is flawed in various ways (like the cappies, or whatever) and doesn't tie together at all. So, making cap ships more "strategic" targets lets us put more value on them, making them drop more interesting things, and also potentially trigger other game-world behaviour (you blow up the capship carrying an important dignitary and suddenly a small-scale war springs up, that sort of thing).. plus generally doing the "real" version of the Border Skirmish and the like.

Player caps, and other wholly-new gameplay offshoots, are probably going to have to wait until we accomplish this general "making the game we already have.. the way it should be" goal. I am putting thinking into player ownership, and you should be seeing the role of capships expanding.. adding more features to what you can do onboard, making their presence more worthwhile in a supportive role on large-scale assaults, etc. With time and tweaking and relevant capship-supported missions, by the time we add player-ownership it should have a real meaning. Right now it would just be kind of a neat "look at me" factor with benefits for massive-scale trading and little other point. That's kind of my overall goal now, fixing stuff that's "neat" but has little point, or is otherwise flawed.

Thanks incarnate...

You are very right about player owned cap ships. They wouldn't really add anything definitive to the game without a lot of other things. But it would add another element to the game that would be fun for the players. We have been anticipating player owned cap ships since the original cap ships came out.

We understand you are very busy and we do honestly want you to do whats best for the game but :) we would like player owned cap ships, just because they would be fun. I can imagine the battles and the devastation they could cause. they could even make ctc more enjoyable.

Thanks for the great work devs,

JB

I'm with you all the way on this.

I do think that adding player-owned capships at the moment might be a bit, uh, "gimmicky". Consolidation of the things that are currently in the process of being developed would probably be a better idea than adding a bunch of "Wow, cool... for 10 minutes" features.

BP is still broken.

It is true, in that we fixed some bugs.

But Border Patrol is pretty damn broken. And has been for a while. One thing that really screws it up is that changing groups no longer aborts your mission, so it's possible to have two border patrol missions active simultaneously.

Strange that you would mention that here.. isn't that mentioning an exploit?
Nov 20, 2006 a1k0n link
Hmm. Kinda, maybe, not really? Having multiple missions seems to not work, even though you can do it.

Heh, OK, fair enough, I didn't try ;)

Why not just make the Trident a Player Cap right now?

Or make a Gunship called the Scarab which has 2-3 Turrets on it but no docking bay?
Nov 20, 2006 moldyman link
The Scarab would be what we call the Behemoth heavy.
Nov 21, 2006 Equanimizer link
But its not a gunship, its a heavy Trade Ship with a Turret.

I mean something thats either slightly more maneuverable, or heavier with 1-2 more turrets and more menacing.

It really would be a good idea to have a ship about that size with 2 or 3 turrets, with its only purpose to be a gun platform. It would be more of a defense support ship, because it would be relatively slow and heavy. It would be a good ship to accompany a few trading ships that can't defend themselves well. If the fighter escort is compromised, then there are a few turrets to deal with as you approach the main convoy.
