I am new here and not certain if this has been discussed. Is the only point of view available from the cockpit or is there a 3rd person view option?

You can hit F9 to get some other views, but they aren't that useful for flying. Generally people fly in first-person mode. One of these days we'll probably revisit the 3rd-person mode to improve it a bit, but it hasn't been a big priority.
