The "Silly" Approach to Role Playing

OK I apologize for my obvious role in hijacking this thread.

Baaaack on topic, Princess Vespa, I think you can roleplay whatever the hell you want, just don't expect everyone else to go along. Especially genka. Well, and spuck, but he's an old stick-in-the-mud anyway.

i like to use improvisional rp. when i rp a red eyed gunner shooting at some one, and they refuse to rp running, i help them rp going boom. you have to roll with the punches i say. improve rp is a fine art.

I think you guys got me wrong here. I do love to role play and probably will continue to do so online. But I don't care if everyone does. I was just getting some ideas on role play out there to get to know people and let everyone know I was having fun with the game. Obviously this is a touchier subject than I thought. Oh well, now I know so I'll keep these kind of discussions topics in the RP forums.

They didn't get you wrong. You made your point and it was generally well-received. Most of the posts in this thread were just off-topic meanderings that only peripherally had to do with you. It's not that touchy - they're just a bit punchy.

I do all my roleplay quietly and disregard most of the non-rp transmissions. I don't try to engage anyone else in rp unless they are obviously in character and up to something that might work in with what I'm doing. The only exception is group combat, where the rp during battle comes very naturally.

Yeah, we're all pretty punchy.

Especially Miharu >_>

Not me, I'm not punchy! I'm a teddy bear!
I mean a Grolar. Yeah.

You gonna explain what exactly went off between you and Miharu, or do we have to drag it out of you with flares?
Oct 19, 2006 Gavan link
Lecter you couldn't drag 120cu of simple plastics from a moth with flares, let alone draggin Moldyman from Miharu with them...
Oct 19, 2006 Dr. Lecter link
Gee, Gavan, why don't we test that next time we're on. I'll even give you an even 100cu to haul.
Oct 19, 2006 Gavan link
Why would I want to haul 100cu of simple plastics around? Just so you can prove your impotence?

Pfaah I say. Pfaah.

edit: Wait, that statement makes me sound like I'm a competent moth pilot. Strike that. I am admittedly one of the worst moth pilots in the game.

That said, I would be willing to sponsor a Moth pilot for you to try and take down. Might be a bit of a logistic nightmare, but we could do it! What would be your preferred layout? Valk with 3 sunnies? Hog with a sunny and a jack?
Oct 19, 2006 Dr. Lecter link
Based upon my experience with the tri-flare valk and moths, I'd stick with it.

Sounds good. Maybe I'll fly escort in the same.....

...says Gavan.

I used to RP a version of Frog from Chrono Trigger who was tragically displaced in time. . .

Good times.

Sir Frog, hehe

Where the hell did you come from anyway Magus? Long time...

Speaking of silly RP, we should revive the 'package delivery' gang! Well maybe not.

Gah, vile necromancers!
Nov 17, 2006 Hoax link
At least it's on-topic necromancy unlike the vile comment spam.

VO makes roleplaying a step easier than most MMO's, because communication is done through typing. For this reason you can take some 90% of random comments in stride. If someone says "excuz me i am n00b, can sum 1 help plz thx?" you've got a viable roleplaying situation rolling. Some poorly educated sap is begging anyone in the universe for instruction, and accordingly, more often than not he gets a logical reply. "Yeah, just type in the command /explode. It'll open up your ship's tutorial for you." The key to acting 'in character' is to scrap the word acting, because most people who haven't done a whole lot of acting tend to think it's similar to lying. (Hence why people feel guilty under stage fright.) Instead, think of it as assuming a few basic, well, assumptions that everyone knowingly follows:

1. This isn't a game. This is the reailty. Example of this, The Matrix.
2. Exploding doesn't make you dead.
3. The /me command doesn't mean you're actually doing whatever your typing. It's just an extra function for your onboard communications system. You can type "/me finds 100,000 credits underneath the floor board!" as many times as you like, but it doesn't make it true. Instead, just 'act' in stride as your character would. If you failed to launch your escape pod in time, and suffered permament death, would you take the time to type out "Aaagraghagahaha!" or "/me dies."? Personally, I'd just get very quiet. Maybe if I was a secret agent or something I'd set an automated device to relay a message to whoever I need to if I don't reset it every 24 hours, but even then I'd create a new character named "Xang Xi Voice Message #8140382" to give the right tag when I have the message 'relayed'.

At the moment the few tens of players online at any one time make it easy for us to interpret 100 chat as role playing or direct conversation. We filter the chat and , since we are used to the styles of most of the other players, we immediately know whether a comment is rp or ooc.

Following a set of rp and rl threads in a universal channel will become very difficult with several hundred players on line; clearly a different approach to communications will be required . There have been a lot of constructive posts about this on the suggestions forum, but in the meantime why not allocate a specific channel for rp ?

That way players wishishg for a more immersive experience could switch off 100 and rp without the distraction of general chat.
