I truly believe that it's still too early to really start selling the game off to publishers. I know that I'm not a professional in this particular field, nor am I even close to being qualified to be in such a responsible position such as yours (Incarnate), but if I were a publisher I'd want to see more material that would best represent the final product of the game. You know, just to be sure that the money that is being invested will be worth it. I'm sure you're well aware of this, but I'll just offer my two cents anyway.
From a tester's perspective, there's no doubt in my mind that Guild Software will pull together to meet all of their goals and apply their intended features to Vendetta (final) in an intuitive and solid manner. But the publishers don't know that. They haven't played the game month after month, watching it progress from what it was before to what it is now. They can't envision what you the developers are envisioning. And I believe that's the main obstacle of finding a publisher -- to get your ideas into their mind in a clear and thorough manner.
What they want to see are those final features being applied to an alpha or beta version of the game. Contradictory? Yes. But I think this is where some gaming companies tend to bend the rules. They would often put their artists and animators to work to get them to produce scripted movie or trailer, showing how the final version of the gameplay will look like. Now obviously it won't be an exact representation, but it'll be eye catching.
The publishers want to see multiple players manning spaceship turrets. They want to see players mine asteroids for minerals. They want to see entire fleets with capital ships attacking each other. They want to see populated space cities, sprawling with spaceships and robots. And while they may not be implemented yet, they can still be scripted through a cinematic approach. Even something as rudimentary as storyboards may do the trick.
Vendetta Test just barely scrapes the tip of the iceberg. And we all know that. But they don't. They want something more. I think perhaps if some type of trailer or scripted movie (perhaps using the game's engine) was made to demonstrate the ideas that you've got for the final version of the game, it would've left a bigger impression.
I'm not exactly sure whether any of this holds any truth, since I've never actually developed a game to know what goes on behind the scenes, but as a customer these are the things that I want to see before I'd like to invest my money in an MMORPG game. And if you think about it, getting a publisher to publish your game doesn't seem all that different than selling the game to a person. But anyway, if you think that this is all just a bunch of bullshit, then feel free to ignore it all. Hehe.
But I think I speak for the community when I say that we're all beginning to get the bigger picture here, and we like what we see. And that we want MORE of what we're seeing. The proof is in the growing numbers. We're hooked, and we want more, publisher or no publisher. Keep working at it. Something has to come out of all this effort. And I'm sure when those skeptical publishers finally wake up to see what's going on, they'll feel dumb not having taken your offer when another one does later on in development.
=)

I can see it now: the .mac gaming promotion. Every new .mac account receives Vendetta FREE (i.e., no monthly vendetta fees for .mac customers). New macs purchased alongside a .mac account receive, in addition to free Vendetta, a Digital 3D wireless Joystick from Logitech.
