All about mining
Hi everyone,
Got a couple of questions about mining in the game:
1) How long does it take for heat to go down after it was mined? Any formula that are out on that? Also, what is the max temp it can reach?
2) How long does a can stays in space after it is jettisoned? I have heard 15 mins... is that true?
3) Are there any mining guilds so far in the game?
Great game you have (ex Eve-player that cancelled his account to join VO) and I cančt wait to see what is next.

the roid's heat depends on the size of it, so a formula is the closest concept. and the "can" is dependent on another time frame... 5mins and 15mins, i dont remember which one is which.
but the most important question is this;
are you mining for the experience or the minerals?
as for the guilds, there are trading guilds that do focus on mining events as a group.
the guild of free traders are by far the largest trading guild.
but there are others that do the exact same as they do. (healthy competition...) such as Phoenix Alliance, Sigma Shipping, and i believe that CGCC still does something, even though their numbers are smaller.

I would say a bit of both actually... XP to be able to equip better mining gear & minerals for money & eventually get into the "crafting" system that will come down the road (even though we dunno what it will be yet).
I like the heat idea instead of depletion of roids (like in Eve). Sounds is a different and nice spin to it.
As for can, just wondered about it since mining, getting a hauler and come back get it could be a good tactic to try. Of course, 5 mins would be too short for it.

This page has the exact heating/cooling formula for asteroids that I got from Andy (Dev). Cargo decays after 15 minutes if a player is in-sector and after 5 minutes if there are no players in the sector. I have not yet confirmed what exactly happens when all players leave and return to a sector.
To mine for XP, it is best to use a Ragnorok and constantly eject everything. To mine for good minerals in a new area, it is strictly best to use a Centaur (or just prospect with whatever fast light ship you like). To mine for minerals either indiscriminently or from asteroids you have previously noted as being good (and can find again without a scanner), it is almost always best to just use a Behemoth. The exception is if you are mining for minerals in a station sector within 2-3km of the station -- then it is best to mine with the Ragnorok and run back to the station for a Moth to collect the goodies.

Thanks for the info commander. I saw the wiki page, just not the part with the formula. :)
I am flying a Wraith MkII right now and plan to follow your suggestion. I try to raise my XP as much as possible to be able to be an efficient miner. Of course, I keep the good stuff as well. :)
The more I look into it, the more I like the mining here. Can't wait for "crafting" :)

dr doak, dont forget that [itan] is one major mining guild.
though, rather than go for the raw material, we rather mine scrap metal out of the pesky serco ships lurking here and there.

Mining is cool, unlit i superheat all your roids and demand money for em.
One hint from a pirate, after all ores change locations (which is comming soonish) keep the locations to yerself, you could easily be telling me. I'm the original roid boiler, ask Viscous Nanite if he ever bobs his head in again :P

Hey icewyng. The Guild of Free Traders [TGFT] is not only a killer trading guild but also a good mining guild. We have "stuff" that can tell you locations of ores/roids and what % of a roid is what. We also have one of the better miners in VO in our guild, Ecka Estenk. He has a mining level of 17-18. He is very knowledgable and helpful.
When he is sober....
Ecka....
Ecka....
You're sober?!
