See newspost and updater MOTD. Please post any problems or feedback. NOTE: work on the whole "everything-is-a-trade-item" bit is ongoing, I expect to uncover problems as we go along.. whether it's simply twinking (which is obvious and forseen) or other issues. Regardless, it'll be a work in progress.. but I think it's the right direction, especially once we get the new economy / "build-tree" bit going and all.

Enjoy!

Luis has new Hive models in the works, which will hopefully be used with the expansion of the hive into a full production entity (three hives in the universe, each with unique models).

Way... cool...!

- license levels are only checked when equiping addons
- license levels are not checked when purchasing addons (but accomplishments, etc... still are)

Good call. No more newbie cries of "how come there's liek, only 2 guns in this game!"

It also allows all L.Levels to impact the dynamic economy.
Jul 29, 2006 drdoak007 link
so noobs can see that ther are more guns in the game, but cant use them...

it's a good idea, but for those interested in the boot-legging of weapons for use prior to ability-match, there is no point to be able to carry weapons.

aside from person stock-piling, this is 4 updates too late.

Ground breaking update , great to see all the new commodities , and weapons as cargo. The new pirates add another dimension , and I'm sure any wee bugs in their behavior will be fixed .

Off to drink Dau wine....

Cheers

drdoak, I think you're missing the point... guns also fall under the dynamic economy, meaning gun running could now become a profitable trade, regardless of license level. Guns have got to be the most $$$ per cu of any cargo widget.

Imagine a station on the border being blockaded to strangle its arsenal of weaponry, and taking a mission to deliver a cargo load of desperately needed neutron blasters...
Jul 29, 2006 Klabbath link
Phaser;

I don't know why this is so difficult to grasp. Gun running will not be profitable in a universe where there are no buyers. The single largest source of income in such an endeavor is the players, who will NOT PAY FOR A WEAPON THEY CANNOT USE!

Since a player with a license level high enough to equip that gatling turret is capable of docking into any station with a high enough faction and buying the damn thing there, WHY WOULD HE BE WILLING TO PAY YOU TO FLY IT TO HIM FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE?

Sorry for the shouting, but I'm not being heard any other way. Last week's update completely negated this one. Two weeks ago, gunrunning was impossible but hoped for and had a point. Now it's possible, and pointless.

I'm still, like the rest of us, waiting for the entire dynamic economy to take flight, but other than stocking a personal list of armaments in a station that doesn't ordinarily sell them, to use as replacements if you get ganked, the ability to float around the galaxy carrying boomers is completely worthless.

Nigel - you're forgetting about NPCs. Once the dynamic economy is in place, I'm sure NPCs fighting the border war will need to arm their ships somewhere. When they arm their ships, they'll be changing the inventory at particular stations.
Jul 29, 2006 break19 link
Nigel.. you are forgetting something.. After the new economy, which appears to be coming sooner rather than later.. you WONT be able to just drop into any station to buy something.. but only those stations that possess the raw materials will be able to make the items, or some trader will bring a run of the guns themselves to the station, so other players can then buy the guns.. until the stock is down.. then gotta wait for more traders to bring more guns.

also, what about nation specials? I have characters with access to AAPs, but I can't buy them at just any station.. and if I could pay someone to bring me a mothload of them, instead of ME having to go do it myself.. that's a welcome change.

[edit]
Also, you need to understand that these changes that are being made are in preparation for the new economy.. and until said changes are made and tested, bringing in the new economy would be disastrous.. so the devs are making all the necessary changes in anticipation of the new economy.. and we just have to deal with the growing pains until then.

PS.. GJ Guild.. VERY good job!

Maybe dropped weapons could have lower license requirements, because otherwise, they seem kinda pointless now.
Jul 29, 2006 vIsitor link
Or better yet, have certain factions ruduce the requirements at their stations if you have sufficient standing, and have Corvus ignore the requirements entirely (albiet, costing the player a fee to equip anything under-level).
Jul 29, 2006 Phaserlight link
Nigel, I hear you just fine, there's no need to shout. I just have my own opinion, that's all. I'm actually far more likely to read someone's post who doesn't use all caps (although I've been guilty of it at times too). Hurts my sensitive eyes.

I have had an idea for using items above your level for a long time (search the forums for "contraband") but why don't we keep suggestions in the suggestions forum.
Jul 29, 2006 incarnate link
Certain factions *ALREADY* have reduced license requirements (as I posted in the last thread discussing this). Corvus in particular. They always have, for years. So you could always purchase items above your currently "lawful" license level there, and you should still be able to equip them there.

We may still need to lower the required levels and tweak the various factional requirements, that hasn't been revamped yet (the major Nations will enforce lawful equipment to the letter, but the corps and sub-factions may be less stringent, Corvus has always been intended to be an area of contraband and black market). If you were going to "run guns", Corvus is where you would go anyway.

Like I posted at the start of the thread, this is a work in progress, it's going to be a little while before we work out all the kinks. Posting criticism and concern is greatly appreciated, but please do not jump to any conclusions.

As I mentioned to momerath ingame earlier today (and apparently as was discussed and determined to be not "trivial" to implement by the devs...), now that we can load addons into our ships, we need to be able to load them more than one at a time (they need to be collapsable... ie, "40x Positron Blaster" is what you see in the load/unload window). It's tedious to click on the load button 120 times to load up a moth with X gun...

Figured it should be posted here just in case.

Great update! I love it when something we've been discussing for ages becomes part of the game (equipment as cargo).

Fantastic . There is now a liquidate Ecka Mission . I can trade rare books. The npc pirates are a menace , but not an insurmountable obstacle . I can trade bearing grease. The pvp is still the best I have come across in any game .

My pal Eddie the chef came round tonight . I tried to explain that this chap momerath , who I was talking to , was changing the program on a computer in America which was affecting the way that those ships on my computer behaved , and that ship there was flown by a real person somewhere else in the world , and that the yellow chat was friends in a guild and there was a race round the universe going on and......

I'm still vaguely amazed that any of it works.....Eddie is totally gobsmacked by it all.

in regards to the 'click 120 times' problem.. if you select the top piece of eqipment, select load once.. and hold down the enter key......

it saves clicking anyway... you can buy them the same way, select the cargo, click 'buy' once, then hold down the enter key... unfortunately for buying you have no way of knowing how many you purchase that way.
