What's new in 3.2.4?

May 13, 2003 Urza link
I hear sectors 16 through 18, the frig, the special purple ships as bots. Is that it? was the prom toned down? weapons played with? anythnig like that?

It doesn't look like they had a chance to deal with any of the balance issues. Hopefully after E3, things will go back to normal.

s18!?!?!? Where?

New: a1kon's alien ship is now present in sectors 16 and 17.

New: There is a motionless Frigate in 16 with a 1500 bounty (at least) with targetable turrets and a huge explosion.

Sector 16 is acessable from both sector 15 and sector 5. 17 is acessable from sector 11. Sector 18 exists but is uncharted. Sector 17 has a station with the "turkey fetus" electronics widget.

Wormhole exit animation is zoomed out.

Request: Could we switch the Gravitron's and Tachyon's velocities back? It just seemed more balanced with the Gravs firing quicker and faster, but taking more energy.

- A couple weapons have been tweaked, I don't know the specifics though.
- A couple bug fixes
- A zoomed view of ships in the ship select panel and buy ship panel
- if you have a radeon 8500 or higher / geforce3 or higher / parhelia in windows using directx 8.1, you will get cooler looking prometheus and itani fighter. Also, you can enable a neat glowing effect by typing /set rglow 1 in the console.
This does not work in opengl and there are a couple other restrictions.

edit: Not sure if the fx are there for geforce3 users.

Did you improve the accuracy of the graviton?

For weeks it's been "Frigate!!! FRIIIIIGATE!! We WANT the FRIGAAAAAAATE!!!", then, when the frigate is delivered its "well, yes, but what else have you done? What about this? Have you cured cancer yet? No? What have you to show for your time?" Okay so I've exaggerated slightly, but really people!

We're just greedy. The frigate wasn't everything we hoped for (ie, it doesn't even MOVE), and in some ways surpassed our expectations (the explosion roxxorz).

So we're looking for what comes next.

To be honest, beyond the coolness factor of how the new things look, the update seems to be all bark and no bite. I'm hoping 18 will make up for 17. :)

Whistler...I totally agree...but has the devs found a cure for cancer? or is that a 3.2.5 possiblity? :P

The frigate I think is a very nice addition. I can't stop liking it :)

OOoooo and glow effects heeheh

For all of you who wanted balance fixes, etc... wouldn't you RATHER see the devs get a publisher behind em so that this game can move to completion?

SirCamps: As far as I am aware, Tachyons have always had higher velocities than Gravitons. If Gravitons had a higher velocity than Tachyons, I'd simply always use Gravitons. See the weapon balance thread in the suggestions forum.

The weapon tweaks seem to be (as far as I can tell):

Gatling: Energy cost decreased from 9 to 8.
Gauss Rifle: Velocity increased from 140 to 150. Energy increased from 50 to 60.
Graviton: Velocity increased from 160 to 170.

Some of those tweaks might have occured in 3.2.3 and I just didn't notice them. I'm going to avoid reviewing the changes here, but I point interested parties toward the weapons balance thread here:

Celebrim, in 3.2.0, gravitron were 190 m/s, with tachyons given a speed of 170 m/s. They may fire slower and be slower, but they take much less energy. At some point in the next 4 updates, the values were switched.
May 14, 2003 Celebrim link
SirCamps: If you are right it was as early as 3.2.1, because I have all the values stored in a excel spreadsheet I use to judge the balance of the weapons and keep track of any changes I see made. It's possible I misrecorded them but tachyons have been faster than gravitons as long as I can remember. The word 'tachyon' refers to a hypothetically fast particle, so its entirely possible that the name was chosen because this is the 'fast blaster'.

One of the main reasons that I'm skeptical of any recent change in thier velocities is that if gravitons were faster, I would have been using them. My weapons selection process was basically find the fastest moving energy weapon (tachyon's) and the most efficient low energy weapons (use to be rails, now rockets).
