We have to request news headlines because it makes the sector/station loading much faster.

I also think the station UI could use some work. It just isn't set up logically. I use it all the time but I still get lost in it. It takes me forever to find what I'm looking for.

What LeberMac said about 3 rows of buttons being akward is right on. It's just really clumsy. It would take me 10 minutes to draw up a flow chart, representing a new menu system, that would make a lot more sense and would make everything easy to find.

We all appreciate the work you guys are putting in and your goal of making the interface friendly for beginners. However, the new UI falls WAY short of that goal in my opinion. I actually know what I'm looking for and have trouble finding things. I have to imagine a new user would be completely lost.

I know you just revamped the UI but I really think you should consider another overhaul. You could even let us throw around some ideas for the layout and take some ideas from that. The new interface doesn't really seem much better than the old to me.

I know this post seems really negative but I'm trying to be honest and helpful.

Okay example #1 (Yes I know it's a cheap rehash of earlier attempts of mine)
Benefits of this interface example:
- All interface elements in horizontal bar across screen, meaning you don't have to hunt and search for buttons to click, less mouse movement, more organized feel.
- Larger buttons and easier to click on when flying around
- Chat in colors
- "Set Home" button in upper right is closer to the location descriptions of "Where You Are"
- Color-coded chat buttons
- General chat button has drop-down menu which allows selection of recent numbered chat channels
- Alternating black/dark gray chat line backgrounds to help separate different multi-line chat entries (subtle)
- Before text bar - text indicator of what channel you are typing into
- The color of the text you type in the entry field corresponds to where/what channel it will be sent
- Entire chat area is outlined in the color of the mode you are typing in (General = blue, Sector = violet, Guild = orange, etc.)

I'll do more screens when I get time thru this week.

"There is inconsistency in the use of "power cell".

In (new) station interface, Other Addons, there are mixed usage of

PowerCell
Power Cell
battery (fast charge power cell description)."

also the ultra charge is the same way

Nice LeberMac! That's a step in the right direction. I'd redo the menu structure more.

Would it be possible that in the next update, we get the ability to render shaders from multiple light sources? Maybe an "unsupported" manually added configuration option so we can see how much impact it actually has? So far no changes have actually had an impact on my system and I run full out. This eye candy may not hit me or many others as hard as has been estimated. And if it does, maybe it won't our next hardware upgrade.

LeberMac's model makes it harder to be in a bar and monitor general chat.

And the colors look like it's been designed by a drunkard.

Oh...

Okay, I think the new UI is a vast improvement over the older new UI. However, after looking over Lebermac's layout, I'd have to agree that his ideas make a lot of sense.

As I've gotten more comfortable with VO I've had less and less trouble finding things, but that's not a function of ease of use; I was able to eventually learn how to bootstrap a PDP-8, even though that was about the most non-intuitive piece of crap ever bolted together.

It does make a lot more sense to have all buttons grouped together in one area. I don't know how feasable drop down menus are from a programming standpoint, but it would sure make things easier than bouncing from screen to screen. I also agree that putting navigation under "Ship" is confusing. I know where it is now, but it's not where I'd expect it to be.

If I had to vote, I think I'd vote for Leebs's layout over the current one.

PDP-8 FTW!

Once again I think Nigel/Klabbath has it (and Lebermac, I guess).

I like the new UI, but the Tabs-within-tabs would probably work better if they weren't arranged on the top... And then the side... And then the bottom. The current arrangement requires you to mouse around a heck of a lot more than the 'rows' sort of layout that Leber's demonstrated above.

My vote's for the Lebermac-style interface.
(Hire him! :P )

(Edit: Still can't get over the sample text in Lebermac's screenshot. XD )

The current arrangement has the advantage that you can go level by level in one continous motion. Which seems to make it pretty efficient after getting used to it. :P

Splitting bar and common chat is nice idea. But everything else LeberMac said is right. His "graphical suggestion" is not ideal but gives some clue of what new UI misses.

Though we already have thread about UI, why split?

*This* thread is actually about 1.6.8

LOL man. Get yer butt back ingame and prove me wrong! Heh.
I have some more ideas that I should be able to finish up tonight and post if at all possible.

Must admit I like the look of leber's version of the UI , and I can see the advantage of closely grouping the buttons.

Lebers layout is simple and straightforward, I would like to see it ingame. :)

I concur, now that I have just restarted my suscription, I can see how sort-of convoluted the current one is, even tho it is a improvement. I really like the new features, and how everything is orignized. But it gets pretty confusing and pretty complex. I would LOVE to see something like LeberMac's interface instead.

At least LeberMac accepts the truth (b^.^)b

I wonder if Leber realizes the station behind the interface AND in the smaller picture are Sedina L-2, not K-13 >_>

I know. Don't really matter does it?
Anyway, perhaps THIS weekend I'll be able to work more on ideas.
