What keeps you coming back ?

Ok it's newb question open to flaming and even though the chances are you've grown tired of hearing this it's my honest first impression as a newb. A very quick browse through the board doesn't really provide any answers. So ...

After 10 hrs or so of play I'm wondering what it is that makes VO more than simply Elite+chat ?

Listening in on channel 100 it seems there are some hard core pilots out there but what is it that keeps you here apart from companionship and chat ?

I'm sure dog-fights are great fun and I've yet to get into a player-player shoot up but I was kind of hoping it'd be possible to rise up and own your own space station or command a fleet of ships and take over a star system... is this kind of thing done at all ? Can players do anything at all apart from move stuff from one place to another and dog-fight each other ? What about "henchmen" ? Can one be hired and "payed" by another player, at least that could be more interesting than the default missions that appear to be exactly same at every station.

--- please be gentle ;)

Newbie myself.

The PvP seems to be a huge draw. Also, as I was reading the design docs on the Hive (from the dev Wiki) I became fascinated with the idea that they are shooting for, an NPC race that actually grows over time, infesting the place. To take them out/push them back requires the cooperation of many players.

That's your fleet, BTW. The other players in the game. Lead them on against the enemy race or go take out some big Hivage/pirates/whomever gets in your way.

Elite + chat isn't accurate. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to group up and take on larger foes or other groups of players. And don't discount that as a huge draw...it's pretty much the magic combo that makes MMORPGs what they are.

VO is, from what I can see, a real nice sandbox. We're given the systems, the play area and some structured missions and told to "go at it!" Playing it by yourself, ignoring or discounting the actions of other players, that's when you say "what's the point?" and put it away.

At the moment El-Rik, players can't own space stations or systems, but that will change. Otherwise, you can do everything you mentioned and more.

Dog fighting is fun and once you start trying it, you'll love it! Sedina B-8 is the traditional place to find a pvp fight, but Deneb B-12 and C-10 have become popular places lately thanks to the new border skirmish missions. (Go check that mission out, it's amazing!)

Something to watch for is player run events. There's a race around the universe every weekend with a 2 mil credit prize. There's also a weekly nation war...a battle between Serco, UIT and smurfs. It's also a blast. There are lots of other events too, just ask around and check the forums.

Another option that I haven't tried yet, but many do is pirating. There are places in the universe that I won't fly through without a heavily armed ship because I know that I'm going to get jumped. There is no mission for that, but being on either side of a pirating/cargo running engagement is a good time. And yes, you can hire your self out to a pirate or join a pirate guild or form your own group and hire pirates or "henchmen" to work for you.

If you're looking at expanding your horizons, try flying into grey space and talking to people you meet. Pay attention to the guilds people belong to. Joining a guild is a great way to find people who are looking for a playing experience similar to what you want and can help give you some direction if you can't find any on your own.

While you're in greyspace, set your home station at a place where you can buy some decent equipment and then go out and fight people. You can invite them to duels or just jump them. You will die...probably a lot at first...but dieing in a good fight is at least as fun as hauling phase arrays across the galaxy.

Something else to consider is not monitoring 100. I usually don't. Try only talking to people you meet along the way using sector or private chat. If you find someone that you want to keep talking to, pick one of the thousands of other channels or group up. After listening to 100 all the time, it'll seem lonely at first, but it'll feel more like you're roll playing and less like an IRC.

I hope some of that helps. I'm afraid I don't get to play much lately, but if I do get a chance, I'll be sure to send a couple sunflares your way. :)

I've been coming back for the past 4 years because there's always something to do. I don't play the way I used to, but it's still a nice distraction for a few minutes a day.

Why I Play Vendetta:

1. I live close to the servers, so I get a good connection, which makes my gaming experience much better. I was sick of playing Unreal Tournament on servers hundreds of miles away thru GameRanger or whatever and getting ping of around 500, and dying lots before I knew what hit me. Nevermind the cheaters with their hacks. I still die lots in V-O, but at least I can give as good as I get. Or at least see death coming. (Well, not in Deneb B-12, but that's another thread.)

1.a. That being said, the PvP combat in Vendetta simply rocks. I've played lots of FPS games, and liked many of them. V-O has been described as "Space-Quake". It's rather addicting, and you have to think in 3-D tactics all the time, unlike Unreal or Quake, where you can sometimes get away with thinking 2-D.

2. I enjoy the camaraderie of the game. Taunting my guild commander, passing around virtual tequila, Slandering the Serco players to the best of my ability... yeah... good fun.

3. The developers LISTEN to you. Hell, they'll even email you back. They take your input and incorporate it into the game. The company behind Vendetta is leaps and bounds more responsive and friendly than the giant gaming behemoths.

4. Only $10 a month and a free download.

Good, cheap, not-always-clean fun.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

I can't see myself paying monthly beyond this month, just not enough here to keep my interest in the long run, but I can see it improving at it's developed, I think, like roguelazer I'll pop in occassionally to see how it's progressing.

That's a good plan El-Rik.

I keep coming back because the game keeps evolving. I've finished and mastered many games, but this one is alive and always in flux.

PvP is a big draw for me too.

The main thing is the "indie" feel of the development team and the community. Most games are crapped out in one...chunk. We can watch VO grow organically, and sometimes we can even help shape it. That's cool.

Two words: great community

The player base is very small, and once you reach a certain point in the game, there aren't very many interesting missions. But, for the most part, the community in the game is awesome. Lots of player run events, lots of role playing, good clean fun in B-8. Plus the game has alot of untapped potential. I have faith in the devs.

1. Works great on my laptop. It is a new Sony but EQ2 grinds it to a halt.

2. Something different, much to be explored yet.

3. Not much into PvP but would like to fly multiplayer ships or try shooting from a capital ship. That is the one thing I liked about SWG JTL is that you can have several people in one ship (pilot and several gunners and you can switch around).

4. I have not seen anyone exploiting or using bots (no sense in playing if you are not going to do it yourself).

5. Very good backstory. I hope they keep the new additions in line with the story. I was disappointed that it does not seem to matter what race you are. I was hoping there would be either extra abilities (shielding for Itani) or technology (offensive for serco and defensive for Itani).

I keep coming back because I like watching the game evolve. I admit i havent been on much lately, but that happens every so often. I take a break for a few months, lurk the boards, log in occasionally to get the updates.... but it always draws me back eventually. In another month i'll probably be camped out in game 2 or 3 hours a day again... :)

Theres just something addictive about VO. Possibly its the fact that it DOES seem like a version of elite on steroids, and Elite was the very first computer game i ever seriously played way back on the C-64.

i keep coming back becuase i am excited about all these new updates :)

I love the community, they are such a lively bunch and i have never seen such a MMORPG game which all (i think) of its members get on the forums.

I also love the stories....the player held events like the Deneb run :)

and the best reason of all...this is the only Space MMORPG for Mac :p

Yep , I agree with all the above comments made by the regulars . Its a game you have to contribute to get satisfaction back .
