I'm getting tired of shooting stuff and nothing happens

I've always bee fortunate to be able to play on a very low latency connection. I'm really loving the BS mission, but since it was made longer I've mostly been frustrated. I have most of my hits land on a target only to see them impact and hear them do nothing (I get the Friendly Fire sound effect as a reward). I have killed several people several times over with the fire I put into them, only to see no damage occur. This makes the mission ny unplayable. I die more often than not because someone else gets their hits registered, and mine do not. It's not a matter of skill in the mission when this happens, its a dice roll, blind luck.

When is this going to be fixed?

Are you sure it's due to lag? My ping's always been what people consider high (80 is good for me), and I notice little or no change in BS fights.

(BTW, tonight an Itani HAC was red on my radar, and I could do damage to it, though it wouldn't return fire. What was that?)

I don't know what it is. It's not lag on my end, but I layed into a target, saw and heard many hits, and saw no damage. I just logged off after making massive contact with Shedu's prom, energy and rockets, and doing exactly NO damage.

It could have been that the sector daemon got behind on collision detection. We made the battle as big as we thought we could without this happening, but obviously we need to adjust that and/or optimize.

(and i thought i was just dodging well)

Actually I've seem the same thing. I also got several warning from the mission about doing damage to others of my faction (possibly flare-splash?).

Yeah, it's probably the sector getting behind. We're working on optimizing that. We're trying to push the limits of things, to make them more interesting (with the space battles and all), but we're having to do more work to get those limits as high as we can make them. There'll be some changes going into the next release which should help.

My main issue with the BS missions is that _every_ ship out there is red, including my own nation's caps. Enemy targeting is (almost) useless. Same thing in BP. Does this have to wait for standings to be reimplemented to go away?

tumblemonster, what IS your average ping? I play with 150 avg, and if I hit, I do hit my opponent. I'm not exactly sure, it might be autosuggestion, but since the devs changed the server packet handling, I'm getting less lag spikes, whereas before, B8 was at times unplayable in (especially if larger convoys warped in).

Yes, I agree with CygnusX, having you own allies as really puts a damper on combat becuase you need to double check which side they are on, instead of just glacing down at the radar to see where the red dots of enemys are, and where the green dots your allies are.

tumble, I noticed this sometimes at the Nation War too. Very rarely but it does happen. I guess 30+ people firing shots in the same sector at the same time is too much currently.

My average ping is 40-50. This didn't happen all the time, but enough of the time to be frustrating, and it was always a suprise.

This was happening to me as well. I usually have a steady ping at around 40.

I also second the idea to fix the whole allies show up as enemies with your targeting system during BP and BS. It gets frusturating to keep targeting your allies when you press the target closest enemy key.

The whole allies-as-enemies thing only impacts the Serco (in Deneb), but we're well aware of the problem and want to fix it as soon as possible.

I've had this problem with all kinds of bots and botting missions, as well as with players, for the past four months (see http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/2/12828#163806). Here's to the hope that if this occurs in the BS missions, the devs might find the issue important enough to resolve, even if my sole occurance wasn't ;-)

Yeah, sometimes I get hit or I'll hit someone else, hear the beep, see the "poof" of an impact, and nothing happens. I can't offer hard data to back up my claims, but as I recall it does happen more often in busy sectors.

Don't forget the "absorb spots" on most ships, too. They're points where the ship can be hit but no damage can be done. Been there since the game first came out, they have.
May 15, 2006 LeberMac link
Wise you are, roguelazer. Know about those "absorb spots", I did not.
May 15, 2006 incarnate link
Wait a minute here. You guys know the "damage meter" is quantized, right? So like, there's only like eight different points of "damage" for a remote target. You aren't going to get a realtime damage from that. But if you hit them, and it beeps, you are hitting them.. it just may take a few hits before you'll see their health graph updated.
May 15, 2006 roguelazer link
I'm talking about the absorb spots where when you hit the ship there, you get a "thud" instead of a beep and no damage is done. The valk has a giant one on the nose cone. It's been there since the mid 3.whatevers.w
May 15, 2006 tumblemonster link
The problem Im seeing is the thud, like you'd get if you were hitting someone with friendly fire, and no damage occurs. Whenever I hear a beep, I see damage. The times I don't do damage, I hear the FF thud sound.
