No update tonight.

May 12, 2006 incarnate link
We're kind of unexpectedly down one dev tonight (Andy, nothing's wrong, he's just doing some family stuff). We could probably release without him, but if anything went wrong it would take a bit longer to fix. So, in the interests of game stability, we're going to hold off on the client release tonight. Ray says that's just as well anyhow, since he's trying to debug some stuff that's cropped up in the new UI additions. So, expect a release next week with twice as much stuff :).

Michael and I *will* be trying to do a server-side update tonight though, with some changes to the Border Skirmish and maybe some other additional features. We'll see how that goes, as of last night there were still some bugs to work out, and I haven't talked to Michael yet today. But we're aiming to get it into production tonight.

Tonight I will also post some development images of the "UI stuff" that ray is working on. Not actual screenshots, but mockup designs and such. I'll post that to News with a link to a thread in Suggestions where people can give feedback and ideas. I know people are curious about all of this, and I haven't been intentionally secretive or anything, just still working out details and whatnot.

So anyway, that's about where we stand. I would have posted to Roguelazer's thread, but I wanted to make sure and get people's attention on this.

Cool. I mean, new stuff is cool. But new stuff that actually works is cooler, even if it takes a few days extra. And development mockups are super-cool.

I am saddened that we won't get all the updates tonight (but I would freak out if the server went down!).

Any new ships from Luis in the pipeline?

I'm bumping this as another thread asking if there is an update tonight has been posted to more recently (even before I did it).

Bunch of new ships from Luis are in the pipe. You'll see at least one in the next update.

Also, I just posted about the interface mockups to the news page. Comment on the Suggestions forum thread I made for it, please.

Border. Skirmish. ROCKS!!!!!

At one point there were 3 Serco teradons vs 1 Itani HAC and 1 Itani Teradon. The Itani Teradon was giving one of the Serco Teradons a full broadside and seeing that much firepower was just awesome. I reiterate my point that the capship AI should know to use broadsides when possible. We have Newtonian physics... why can't the capships start moving torwards their enemies, then turn to fire broadside while still moving in the right direction? Like the Destroyers do in Homeworld 2.

because no one has made them do that yet, rogue. We aren't unaware of these possibilities, there just aren't enough of us to program them all in time for you ;).

On the other hand, the Teradons in particular are specifically supposed to attack head-on, since their major anti-cap-ship weapon fires forward. And from a tactical standpoint, this makes sense. It greatly lowers their defensive cross-section with respect to their target. One can assume they would concentrate significant armor on the bow. Kind of the reverse of the napoleonic "crossing-the-T" tactic of naval warfare.

We really, really need capship-specific AI, but we do not have it, and our AI guy is on vacation. So, it'll be a little bit.

I just saw two Itani HACs broadsiding each other. This must stop...
