Unless you can set up jumbo frames everywhere between you and Wisconsin... :-)

Leber, I'm surprised that you havn't begged the Devs to let you jack straight into their network. Nothing like having a ping of 0.1ms.

you could rent out the offices below theirs and tap into the server al la mission impossible.

That'd only work for the test server, though. The production servers aren't in the same building as the office.

Just a REALLY long optical cable from the servers to the house, approximately 15 miles of cable? How many repeaters would that require?

LOL a ping of 0.1 ms. That would rock, I'd have to get a better compy to take full advantage, though.

Leebs,
The limiting factor wouldn't be 100Mb since Vendetta has to use less than 2-5Kb/s bandwidth down during normal use.
Dial-up maxes out at 5Kb/s down right?
So I wonder how dial-up users will get by on big cap ship battles.
Less overhead is really only going to effect dial-up users anyway.

leeber on a clear day you could theoretically use some kind of optical line of sight networking. though i think it would be cheeper just to get a t1 line or some such connection. I have been experiencing lag recentley with a ping of about 99 that really shoudl be fast enough to play the game

Kix: I think he means the fact that 100mbit ethernet implies a maximum mtu of 1500 bytes.

Leber: with single-mode fiber and links, it wouldn't require any repeaters. But since my home roadrunner already gets like 7ms to the server cluster, I don't know that you'd see much improvement :).

Duff: we've tested extensively on 200ms+ of latency, and it works pretty well all things considered. "lag" is a pretty nebulous term though, and it may have nothing to do with your network connection.

Leber, Single-mode fiber has a max length of 43.5 Miles! If you get the cable I'm sure you and I could work out the logistics of installing it. Good thing I took that fiber installation course. Renting a splicer and buying the fiber would be pretty pricy.

I've had no problems at all over dial up so far myself, and hopefully that'll extend into major battles.. I know some games that work over dial-up run into problems with lots of on screen characters. (For example Alterac Valley in World of Warcraft - 40 vs 40. Impossible while on dial-up.)

But my only other option is satellite - even worse for games!

Hahahaha. OK Stranger, we'll cut a deal with RedAnvil to run a loooong cable from my home computer directly to the V-O server, and we'll install a dedicated switch on the production server just for me.

I'm sure THAT will be cheap. Heh.

In all seriousness, my ping is usually around 7ms, and that's just fine. It's my computer which hesitates when loading lots of graphics.

I hate you, Leber.

/me contemplates moving again and wondering how much longer he can go without being able to play VO. :(

/me contemplates renting a room in lebers house.

/me then remembers he can prolly chase leber now anyways.

I dunno what you did, but this recent MTU path update better not screw up my load times, cos I know MTU *Sensing* can also fail. My load times are like, closed beta load times! Screens just flash by, I'm pretty sure if I didn't know what the screen already said I would not be able to read it :P

I went from barely being able to read them to not even seeing them most of the time.

There are load screens?
