I agree with jex re: faction standing. Except make it a little more complex, like... You're liked by Orion and Tunguska doesn't like you as much, or.. you're liked by Corvus and that incurs negative standing with TPG, UIT, and to a lesser extent all the other grayspace independents. Obviously you could not have positive Serco and Itani standing.
Having station turrets that can eliminate L-Mines faster than pilots can lay them is a great idea. Giving the turrets excellent aiming so that they can shoot down incoming Avalons is an even better idea. I guess you'd need to position them near docking bays in order to make sure the docking bays steer clear.
Back on the Corvus standing thing:
Even if I was a completely uncaring, ruthless, lone-wolf kind of Corvus pirate, I'd still try to prevent some repeat offender from entering my station. Just for self-preservation. I mean, SOMEONE owns and runs those stations, right? Someone that doesn't want their convoys being splattered and Corvus-Admired pilots being killed by station-campers? Even if the standing is for that particular station only, There's gotta be a limit to how much killing you can do before locals round up a posse.
Oh, and eventually devs will need to set up the relationships between the differing factions. As in Serco and Itani are in opposition, you can't have positive Itani AND positive Serco, same thing with other factions.

leave greyspace a free for all simpey cause it's fun. It dosen't have to be realistic IT'S A GAME MENT TO BE FUN so what if it's not entirley realistic it dosen't have to be it's all make believe.
"You fight Corvus = Corvus don't like you." so im attacked by a handful of unrats using your logic if i fight back ill lose standing and well if i dont im toast sounds like a catch 22 to me

Well, the other parts to the formula would need to go along with the change, as it's all connected. Besides making Corvus standing actually meaningful, the pirates shouldn't be "unaligned", they should be Corvus. That's who they belong to, they aren't fooling anyone. Then, since Corvus is "different" from other factions, they start out being fairly ambivalent toward everyone. They'll let you dock (maybe for a price, or if you do something for them), but their raiding parties in Grey Space won't hesitate to shoot you. You could eventually work your way into their good graces, which keeps the bots off you, but might draw certain repercussions elsewhere.
It's not about complete realism. The game isn't realistic at all, no argument there. But there should be a sort of internal consistency to how things work, and players and the NPCs should have to live within or deal with those rules. Maintaining that consistency ensures that players have fewer "Why do things happen like that? Because it's a game" moments that interrupt the fun of interacting with the game world.

corvus doesn't admire anyone. that display is wrong.
l...nh, those folks would be "Unaligned" pirates, which don't have any faction standing hit for killing them. Not Corvus-aligned folks.
And I know... it's a GAME. Yes yes yes. But things should happen for a reason. Just as long as the reasons make sense.
For example, Killing Corvus SF pilots for their weaponry or their batteries and then repeatedly docking at the same station that they launched from "Does Not Make Sense!" (Quoting Johnny Cochran from the Chewbacca defense South Park episode.)

As I said corvus doesn't admire anyone. Station guards are low payed unaligned guys with a funky uniform and strike forces are bots (with a few unaligned guys in between).
EDIT: those unaligned guys have to buy their funky uniforms and ships themselves so blowing them up actually boosts corvus manufacturing and textile sector :P

Good thing those unaligned bots breed like rabbits. Someone's gotta keep the Corvus sweatshops running!
Corvus space is in the unsavory side of the looneyverse, to give a partial quote:
"This black market cluster of stations has become a major haven for pirate activity, mercenaries and corporations who simply wish to avoid Senate oversight. All manner of underground activities take place here..."
black market, underground activities....so why would they care who gets shot by whom? Not like there is any law there.

Ah, what a simplistic view, Mystic. If there's no rule or law, there's no way you can turn a profit. It may be the Rule of the gun, but it is still a system designed to keep things (like money and goods) flowing. If it's okay for people to keep shooting your clients or your suppliers, what the heck are you going to sell? And to whom? Why do you think there are such things as Organized Crime, protection rackets, bribery of law officers, "deals you can't refuse" and such? So "business" can continue! Senseless slaughter does NOT lead to good business; one would think it would be pretty obvious simply by looking how real world crime works. If player A does good work smuggling goods for Corvus, it should be in Corvus' interests that he remains alive and able to do such work; being shot at by player B should have consequences, even if player B is also in good standing with Corvus? Why have only one smuggler if you can have two? The idea that they wouldn't "care who gets shot by whom" becomes even more preposterous when the shooting is being done by enemies of Corvus and the victims are Corvus "associates". It simply doesn't make sense and should be revamped.
Not so simplistic as you might think jex..you mention organized criime, ok lets use that as an example in what I said. In organized crime there is always those that are at the bottom of the totem pole. Flunkies if you will , they are expendable to keep your important associates happy. I did not say there wasnt a code, just that there wasnt any law=cops. Looking at it the way Corvus would, one trader lost=no big deal as there are always many more that want what they have to offer. The deal you cant refuse, is that you can get blackmarket goods, weapons etc. without having to deal with red tape of other places. If your gonna sleep with dogs, dont complain if you get fleas. In other words, its a dangerous place...you take your chances.
But I suppose the main point I want to get across is this. Corvus is Corvus. It should not be the same at those stations as it is at others, makes no sense whatsoever. Everyone that says it should be changed are probably the same ones that will moan and groan when/if it IS changed, because that eliminates the very fun bus wars, the playing around etc. Faction loss in grey should only be implemented once bribes etc are set up. I mean if its going to be just like every where else, where is the advantage? where is the fun? The adventure for new players making their first trip to Corvus, they may get blasted, but..if they make it, they get stuff they cant get anywhere else. Its dangerous, its exciting, its fun! Dont let this go away...

Dude! I just realised something! This thread is crap! Did you really have to necromance a whiney thread I made? Go make yer own whiney thread!
Oh, and the only thing that has been stated so far that I could actually agree with is if Serco/Itai standing becomes mutual (ie, one drops as the other rises) so should UiT n Corvus, BUT Unmonitored space == unmonitored! If I blast Admired UiT folk in Verasi worm holes, or Itani liked folk in Metana worm holes, same difference! There has to be _somewhere_ us evil types can blast who we like and get away with it...
...Oh yeah, cos this is a necromanced thread, could it be locked? Or do I have to pull out the ninny n the tits?

Bah. I just want a preventative slap on the wrist for Docking Bay L-Miners and Station Nukers in Corvus-Land. That's all.
Turrets would solve it. So would faction loss penalties. So would preventing you from laying mines inside an NFZ, or firing an avalon in a station sector.
Out of the three solutions to this problem, I like turrets the best.

pffttt, if they make a new thread they get blamed for not having used the searchbutton.
If they use the searchbutton they get blamed for necromancy.
Make up your darned mind...

I never moaned about new threads, infact, I made lots of them, the only place I whine is the suggestion forum, where theres a clear thread stating *do not post about!* Plus, its a whiney thread! With no relation to the original post (which was about a bug, not a feature)
