I would actually make storms a bit more dangerous.
Adding lightning effects in there (like the lightening mine) would be utterly cool. Make them not as damaging as mines but still, it's a storm. The dangers of it should be more severe than having to warp towards the exit point.
Perhaps the lightning could be localized near one random asteroid, constantly firing off.

I think we had a discussion about ion storms earlier in which the idea of having random threads of turbulance (like invisible conc mines going off) push your ship around, and perhaps some (very) minor damage upon entry to the storm.
Yes, most of the things here (shared exit points, moving exit points...) would make trading more hazardous for low-level players. This is one of the reason I suggest multiple exit points - give them the choice to pick the safest or nearest one for them.
When I talk about movement, I'm not talking fast... maybe move the center of an exit point 3m/sec to simulate some slow drift. If an exit point is, say, 500m across, you could aim for the center of it, and at the LEAST, you would have nearly a full minute to get there before it moves out of range.
Imagine you're flying a tour-de-universe in your valk or cent II, and you get pulled into a storm. Fighting the turbulance to get your bearings, you see three exit points. Two are over 7000m away, the nearer one on the far side of a dense roid cluster which could harbor a pirate, and the third is a mere 3000m away, but a queen and her minions are right on top of it. With the added 5/sec battery drain of the storm, you probably won't be able to boost all the way through. Do you run the gauntlet and risk not finishing? or do you go the safe route and lose some time?
choices are good.

there is no wind in space.
What about solar "wind"?
gold star for Lebermac!
That would mean sooo much more if you were ingame to present me with it... and then we could fight.
5:30pm PST be there or be square ;)
/me counts on his fingers...
Sooo, 7:30 Central? Okay, if I miss it I will create a character named Square and play him instead as my punishment.
Back on topic, I agree with Cunjo - we should have:
• Shared Exit Point
• Storms in Station or WH Sectors

I like 'em. They just need to be a little more dangerous.
Ditto to what cunjo said. Also:

My take on this:
I agree with lebermac about the diffrent colours and effects of respective colours.
(i don't know any adv. physics or anything like that, so i'm probably wrong here in alot of ways. Feel free to correct me, i want to learn in every way i could.)
Some storms could affect targeting systems and make ships and other objects harder to see and detect, decrease the locking range and possibly a feature where you would have to keep the ship your trying to target centerd within the middle area of your screen for a certain amount of time. Players would have to use the radar wich should have interference, making it harder to use that aswell. Think of EV:Novas Radar a little bit.
One type of ion storms could increase the damage done by projectile based weapon since two diffrent metals in an acid envionment corode. Also collisons between ships could result in some extra damage taken over time after collison as the corrosion start after the two ships touch each other. (I also see a possibility for a new type of weapon, a acid bomb luancher or missile, devoloped especiallt against the new capitolships that are about to enter player control. The effects of the weapon should be damage over time, making it possible to kill of a fleeing capital ship even after it warped. Repair treatment would neutralize and repair the corrosive effects taken by the missile/bomb hit)
We could add a solarstorm or annother type of that creates much interferance, electromagnetic radiation and other strange phenomea.
For example, a potential diffrence could be built up over time, and when two objects then get near each other the potential between them would equalize resulting in a arc of electricity and damage for vessels, this would be rather interesting i think since players would have to keep a certain distance, in order not to get jolts from one and other. Both ships are damaged. Also this could be implemented on missiles as well. They could SOMETIMES detonate before reaching the target becuase of a discharge eiter between the target and missile itself or annother object, asteroid or whatever.
I also imagine weather forecasts, with stormfronts that are hard to avoid. Making it possible as a player or group of players to pirate on NPC and other player traders. This could be very nice addition to the game i think.
How about certain zones gets contaminated by radiation and thus harmful to enter at all? Imagine two asteroids collide and one contains some kind of radioacive material.. And you could buy radiation sheilding to your vessel etc.
Thats some thought i've had aboout ion storms whislt playing the game.

Storms should give your entire ship a bunch of damage just for getting into it. In a random amount. Always unpredictable. And yes they are just decoration, they are not dangerous, just waste your time right now.
One caveat I'd like to add to the general "more dangerous ion storms" movement: I see newbies getting destroyed in ion storms all the time because they lack the fast charge battery. Ion storms *are* currently very dangerous to a newbie who doesn't know what he/she is doing. Making them any worse would probably mean certain death for a newb.
that's ok though, it's not like they are flying around in 30,000cr ships!! Helps them to learn to plot courses around potential ion storme zones. It's all a learning curve.
Seems totally natural that an ion storm would buffet a ship.
The magnetic fields could easily be enormous, and quite dynamic. (Dynamic is important, otherwise you'll just orbit a field line)
this could be represented as random forces on your ship, as Cunjo suggested.

I really like Don's idea about the weather forecasts. What if ion storms moved across a certain system slowly, from the center outward, driven by the solar wind. They would be more rare, and be more like hurricanes than the storms we have now. (i.e span 9 sectors and be more intense at the center than at the edges. Having different colors & properties as well...)
We could also have intense solar flares that make certain sectors uninhabitable, awash with radiation.
Point being, then we could implement Don's weather reports idea-the stations would have a weather report tab in news, pinpointing the storm and flare activity, which would be cool to keep an eye on.
This would necessitate a "layer" over the maps on the navmaps that depicted where the weather phenomena were. Dunno how hard tha would be to code.
Then, besides ion storms and solar flares, we could have comets that moved across the mapgrid, rogue stellar objects, even unidentified huge alien derelict ships, etc, all that drift across systems using the same programming code as the weather.

On radioactivity in space:
Given that your ship is exposed to the sun and everything else without such a thing as an ozone layer, it is safe to assume that our ships are shielded against radiation of most kinds.

I yes of course but some areas may have more intense radiation than others, thus dangerous!
They're not THAT shielded, otherwise blasters would be kind've pointless...
Not my point, my point was that some secors would be harmful to enter due to high levels of radiation.
