Fatal Error: cloudn't open window
Ok I know this should be in the windows bug forum but theres no way i'll ever get a reply if i post it there.
I downloaded vendetta onto a computer at my dad's house/ updated it and attempted to play. However it wouldnt run vendetta, it kept giving me a fatal error so I reinsalled the client, still the same. Then I redownloaded a new client from the website and installed it, same thing happened, I doubt that the client is actually bad, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same problems and what they did to fix it.
All it said was
Couldn't open window
Fatal Error
and thats all.
I run on windows xp professional and I outdo the minimum requirements for vendetta serveral times over, even at maxed out graphics/resolution so their should be no problem there.
Thanks
Chikira

Sounds pretty strange. Do you have the latest drivers for your videocard and the latest version of DirectX installed?
What is the equipment config?
What is the equipment config?
Yes, after the frist failure to open I downloaded dirextx8.0 becuase I know thats what the current vendetta runs on, still didnt work so I updated to direct x 9.0, My video card does have the latest drivers.
I made sure to check the resolution a few times and scan the .exe file for any corruptions.
I'm running on a gig of ram and I think a 2.4 ghz precessor, about 1/3 the system I run vendetta on at home, but even this should have no problems. I also do have a Cable modem connection which should be way more than vendetta would require even if their were 6000 players online
Thanks for the help in advance Incarnate

What would be more useful is specifically what video chipset you have. I've run the game on a 400mhz Pentium2 with 128mb of ram (it wasn't pretty, or very playable, but it ran).. the system requirements are not the issue, I asked for your specific system config in case there was some special-case video hardware that's never been tested before. Some computers these days have onboard video, which most gamers never use and have seen little testing with our game.
Vendetta has drivers to support both DirectX 8.1 and 9.0. I don't think it will work on 8.0. You can also try it in OpenGL by editing your config.ini (in the Vendetta Online directory) and setting:
VideoDriver=OpenGL Reference GKGL driver
It's under the [Vendetta] heading, it'll currently say a DirectX driver or some such. You need to have it like the above, exactly, letter for letter and no additional spaces or anything.
If that doesn't work, delete the config.ini entirely (it'll re-generate it) and re-run the game. I imagine it won't work again, but then edit the ini file again and set:
doshaders=0
Under the [refgl] area. This disables pixel and vertex shaders, and falls back to the fixed-function pipeline of the old GeForce1 series and the like. It should (and does) do this automatically if shader support is not detected.. but it's possible if you have a strange video driver that reports shader compatability but then fails to initialize the shaders properly.. that something could go wrong.
Dunno, some ideas to try. Let me know how it goes. By and large our game runs on a far, far wider variety of hardware than we ever really intended (as far as system requirements are concerned). But, there is hardware out there that has never been tested with the game, as far as we know.
Also: if your computer does have onboard video, you may want to go into your BIOS and increase the amount of shared system memory to allocate to video. It should be at least 32MB, but if it's very small the game may be unable to initialize.

I've seen that error under Linux (I've never run VO under Windows, so dunno if any of this will apply), when there were issues with the OpenGL libraries installed (not in the library path, mismatched versions, etc.). Occasionally I've seen it when there wasn't an issue with OpenGL (at least not one I figured out), and running the vendetta executable directly would give this error, but running the updater and then clicking play would work.
In the Windows forum there's a thread from quite some time ago about this error, and raybondo posted a link to a program that might help track down the cause: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/4/5200

Thanks for the help guys, im having a crack at it now, should be able to get back to you soon. I'm also redownloading it from a different server to see if maybe just the copy on the new york server has a bug/error in it.
Oh by the way I own a g5 and a top of the line custom pc, they both are equally as good as one another in every aspect.

Finally got it to work after the download from the other server. Incarnate you might want to run a test for any corruptions with the New york server.
I installed it and it ran just fine, thanks for the help Incarnate n' folks. Hopefully nothings wrong with the new york server

I just deleted my vendetta tree and did a fresh install (Windows) from the NY mirror, and it works fine for me.
Glad you got it working, in any case.
