Somewhere around here I posted an idea for a 'flechette cannon' which would basically be like a gatling with a much lower cycling rate and firing several 'shots' at the same time. Sort of a space shotgun. That weapon could be made a small weapon - a poor man's gatling.
But the standard gatling is fine, except that its probably not energy efficient enough. Either way, it should remain large and not dilute the separation between the two clases.

Flechette cannon would kick ass.

I must say, it's a royal pain when your turboing away and you still get killed by the gatling cannon.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Half the time when I get a kill with the adv gatling turret, I say to myself, "Man, that person just got away when I shot him at least a thousand times. This things need more damage." The other half I say to myself, "Whoah! That was quick." And I think that's a good thing. It feels balanced in that respect. Some people think that a lot of aiming isn't necessary with it either. Not true. In fact when your enemy keeps strafing and doing barrel rolls, it screws up the aimbot of the weapon, making it harder to hit your enemy. And you know how annoying it can be when the aimbot just keeps on missing when you know that you're aiming with the reticule properly. Well, same scenario here. So the pilot still has to steady the ship in relation to the target, which is not an easy thing to do with a medium or low agility ship.
I wouldn't recommend doing flybys against a ship with an adv gatling turret either. Most of the time you'll get hit once or twice, if not dozens of times, when you get that close and choose a predictable pattern (such as boosting) for the turret to aim for. The point of the turret is to keep enemies away from you. If you're fighting someone who has one, just keep your distance and use medium to long range weapons. I'm sure once the railgun is fixed people won't have as much of a problem with keeping their distance.
