Pre-release players should get access to a ship that looks like the Viper from Battlestar Galactica.
You already have that. It's called the Warthog.
Wow. To ask a business to live up to it's promises has become a controversy. The wailings of various newbs have resulted in the nerfing of many ships and weapons and the introduction of many
limitations to gameplay that favor them (being vulnerable during jumps, requiring 25% battery for in-system jumps) and now they
want Guild Software to break an advertised promise for fear that
they will become somehow more pathetic. Personally, I don't care
that much about the promised "goodies" nor do I long for the
"glorious" times of "alpha/beta." I just want Guild to keep the
faith with it's customers/players.

Harry, I think that was Tyrdium's point... also alluding to some other discussion I can't be bothered to dig up.
But seriously.
The alpha players asking for special stuff *know* that the devs deliver, if not immediately.
Those wo pre-ordered just because of the special stuff (which would be a problem by itself, in my opinion) should maybe check their demands for a bit and, as Spellcast said, wait for it.

Rattmann can I request you post some nice examples for us. Maybe you can give us a nice list of things we wailing newbs have managed to nerf. Also, how does the 25% and vulnerable for jumps requiremen favor newbs? It treats everyone the same. It's also makes the game a lot more interesting and threatening.
The main aim with the nerfs, tweaks etc was to make the game more interesting and more balanced. I can't see any issues with the balance at the moment. I normally see a nice range of ships in combat and in trading. I also notice there haven't been any threads for a while complaining about ship x or weapon x that is way too powerful.

hmm,i wasent actuly playing at the time we went gold (was taking a short couple of months brake to deal with all the console games that i had let bild up playing vendetta) and thus didn't actuly see most of this, just to clear it up was the little tidbit said it was for the guys with prepaid (or whatever it was) on their account status or for the old crowd (alpha-beta)?
PRE-ORDERED.
those who purchased the game in uhh sept-oct of 04 through either a pre-order at EB or Gamestop got:
1- 2 months play time
2- a (small) discount on the box(it was like $42 instead of $46 iirc)
3- the promise of a 24 hour period during which they could level up after the reset but prior to the official launch, (that was a fun time, the bots didnt stand a chance )
AND
4- an unspecified, in game benefit to be determined at a later date.
additionally anyone who purchased a 3 month subscription online during the same time (before the official launch on november 2nd ) got benefits #3 and #4.
around the same time incarnate had also mentioned in passing that he wanted to do something nice for the players who had stuck with guildsoftware during engine, alpha and beta testing as sort of a thank you, but i dont ever remember him making any specific promises about that.
Now, I would have pre-ordered even without any promises of goodies because I believe in what the devs are trying to do, my first 6 month subscription was purchased even before my pre-ordered copy arrived at my house.

As an addendum to my previous demands:
All players having played for a period of greater than two year should have access to a 0.0s refire rate small port version of the capship beams. They will have better than gauss autoaim and in the interests of balance only do 500dmg per hit.
These players will also receive preferential access to new ships for a period of a month after said ships release. This will allow for proper testing and exploiting of the powerleveling and monetary gain possibilites of these ships. Only when they have been reduced to a playable level will they be released to pre-release players. Upon this release, new players levels and inventories will be reset to ensure all post-release players have an equal chance of attaining the new capital ships.
All players having played less than two years will have a flag set in their accounts that makes them take triple damage from a hit by all beam weapons, and reduces their damage to capital ships by half during the testing period. Since Alphas are the only ones the devs can trust to test, we wouldn't want post-releasers to ruin everything.
That is all.

I'm biting the trolls here...
I've joined this game the very moment I heard about it, when it released (november 2004).
Why should I be penalized from goods simply because I didn't hear about it before?
Silly. Insulting. Screw this alpha/beta elitism.

Ooo oooh, im an alpha/beta player, and im greatful for what I already got! ie : access to alpha and beta! (and some nice badges to boot)!
But as a pre-order customer also (nothing to do with alpha/beta, a few people who pre-oredered were neither) I was promised some ingame thingy, as part of the pre-order package, now while I dont mind too much if i never get it (cos I pre-oredered to send some moneys to guild, truth be known) we will get it, and what I would like it to be is simply something to show off with, a special set of decals, or an Ion Painter, so I can draw pretty pictures ingame.
Maybe early access to stuffs would be neat too (I believe the wording to number 4 to be : Early access to ingame features, and an unspecified, in game benefit to be determined at a later date.) because that way everybody would end up with them in the end.
But seriously, just stop asking about this stuff!

Agreed. It's going nowhere, and if the Devs have the time to put something in for us, they will. As it is, they're busy making the game better for everyone.
